I ask every time a paint code query is posted (very frequently!) but why do ford not simply tell their customers what colour their car is, like every other car brand, without trying to break a secret code?

My daughter thought her car was 'Sea Grey' until I learned how to crack the code. It's actually 'Midnight Sky'

First you need the chart (link above), the chart requires you know the model and year. The first digit of the paint code (found in 7th small box down on the ident plate) then reads across to the paint name.

Read somewhere that the second digit is an indicator code (also secret 🙄) of when the colour was introduced.

Alternatively you can put your vin into the Ford website and it'll tell you directly   https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do;jsessionid=fAc2Eqg143jCDWacF5ZSvH3eTJcddgn5rEa9I5Ju.ito034586

OR, if you have a car made by somewhat who isn't, 'Ford', you can nip into Halfords and just read the code off the plate rivetted to your car 🤣

My brain...though you might struggle to access that!

I had a Moondust Mk3 myself so happened to know this one.  But for other colours, they can generally be found by searching online as others have said above.
