Broken fuel connector (quick release) filter housing

Featured Replies

When doing a fuel filter replacement i noticed my quick release connection that leads out of the filter towards the fuel pump is broken. The one with the little white pull & push tab.

I've been looking for a replacement. Either the whole line from filter to pump. Or just the connector. I believe the pipe is 8mm (could be wrong). This is the closest i have found on ebay. Will this fit or can anyone help.

Thanks in advance

I hate people on forums posting "I don't know" answers.... But that's what I'm doing here!!!

However - for such a small (by which I mean cheap) item I think I'd just get a genuine Ford one. Then you'd be sure that it would fit.

Thats fine. But i can't find the part number or size. And the only thing i did find was the complete braided fuel line for over £120. So i didn't fancy that. Also do you know if its 8mm or 10mm fuel line as i also want to fit a priming bulb?

I think your Ford dealer should be able to tell you the part No.

Is the pipe hard plastic as opposed to rubber? If hard plastic how will you fit it on the new end fitting, I would imagine it would be very difficult

The line is hard plastic, I know because I had to replace it a couple of years due to me breaking the lock/release tab, meaning the connector wouldn't detach.

Part no is 1383593. But my Ebay search got only the same absurd Ford prices:

This search gave a bit better results:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=Ford+1.8+TDCi+Fuel+Filter+To+Fuel+Pump+Tube

I have fitted an 8mm non-return valve to my fuel pipe, the one to the filter, but the one from the filter looks the same. I just dipped the end of the pipe in near boiling water for a few seconds, shook off any excess then quickly pushed it on to the valve. Went on easily, and stayed on once cool. So if you can find a fitting, or an elbow and fitting, it should be easy enough to change.

My priming bulb tubing is 8mm, and pushes quite nicely inside the end-of -pipe adapter and over the filter inlet, so is is easy to fit. The problem is the bulb is absolutely rubbish: Neither of its non-return valves seal well enough to generate the pressure you will need, the pipes at the outlet end of the bulb leaked fuel all over my hands, and leaks at the inlet end allowed air in, just what I was trying to get rid of!. It only works with jubilee clips (4) at both ends, and with non-return valves like the very good Ebay one in the photo on inlet. So it is just the plastic squashy bulb bit & the hoses, that I can use.

Photo is without the jubilee clips, it leaked badly like that!

Hey Peter, i was wondering if you have any advice on doing a fuel purge on this model. I did it with the 2 litre engine. I just popped off the return fuel line and the fuel line before the filter. Connected some see through tubing and put both ends in a bottle of Molly Purge system cleaner and ran the engine at idle and different RPMs until the bottle of Purge was almost empty. Reconnected everything and primed up.

If i was to try to do this on the 1.8?

Where would you recommend disconnecting the return line?

Id like to find a quick release, rather than pulling the line off somewhere.

Just last October I had to drain fuel out of my tank (long story!), and I disconnected a fuel return pipe at a quick connect union to do it. I think it was by a tee-shaped bit of pipe on a metal bracket above and to the left of (driver's side) the fuel pump. Where the return lines from the pump and injectors join up. I seem to recall it came apart easily enough, and went back on again after.

To make the purge system work, you need to be downstream (towards the tank) from this union, to get the return fuel from both pump & injectors. I assume the Moly Diesel Purge, when mixed with the fuel in the filter, is burnable enough to keep the engine running. It does say to do this on their web site, I see.

I see no problem doing it on the 1.8, if it works on other cars, except look out for temperature build up. I see return fuel temperatures up to about 80C on Forscan logs, and that is with it going back to the tank. Re-circulation will mean warm or hot fuel going in to the filter, and getting hotter coming out.

Most of the temperature increase is basic physics of compressing the fuel to very high pressure (it is compressible, despite hearing that "liquids are incompressible" so often. The word "relatively" should always be added!) At idle the pressure is not so high, so not much temperature rise, but raised rpm will increase the pressure a bit. Even at idle my pump puts out over 400Bar, 6000PSI, a very high pressure by most standards.

You are right to do it before the filter, any work done between filer & pump risks introducing dirt, the last thing you want!

Cheers Pete!

I think i can see the area your on about. 👍
