Yeah, it's about £45 which is a lot for potentially two days use out of that 5 weeks.

Also just realised that if the car sells before the end of the month I'll end up paying the £50 cancelation fee on top of that as well.

Looks like a there isn't going to be a free way to do this so it's just working out the most cost effective choice.

You shouldn’t have to pay a fee if it’s nearly run out. The fee just comes off any refund, you won’t have to pay any more to them.

I've been caught out doing that before.  The new owners insurer contacted my insurer to inform me someone had cloned my car.  Awkward... :whistling:

That's what I thought, but unless I'm reading this wrong, I would have to pay £28 to cancel today?

It says the fee has been reduced so you don’t pay more than the cost of insurance. So presumably you had a refund of £28.64 due but it’s all being swallowed up by the fee.

They can’t charge you for nothing, it’s costing them less for you to cancel than if you let it run out. The fees are regulated and it’s more of a retention of your refund than an actual fee when you cancel.

Now, where's that Dan fellow from Adrian Flux when you need him! LOL

Perhaps I should word it differently. They can’t have more money off you for cancelling than if you see it through. They can only hold back some of the refund.

That’s what it’s saying in the asterisk note. The fee has been reduced to make sure you don’t pay more than the annual cost of insurance.

I’m also assuming you paid annually at the start. If you pay monthly then there will be a fee to pay them. But it’s still not costing you more than if you hadn’t cancelled and let it run to the end.

Hi yes i have just done it for next moth insurance  as my premium went up by £80    i got in touch and they said they could not do any thing or price match  so  they said if i wasn't happy i would after go else ware

but i did want to stay with them  but having said that to me  i thought i will go else ware  went through to cancellations   kept asking why then cancel  this happened twice  then on the last cancel they asked me if they  knocked £50  would i stay    so i was happy with that so i did

you just have to show that you mean it and they do not want to loose your custom  hope this helps

The IPID for quote me happy says the cancellation fee after the first 14 days is £50 however it also says:

”The cancellation fee may be reduced to ensure the total amount you pay in the period does not exceed your annual premium.”

So basically when you’re trying to cancel Tom, the prorated amount of your policy you’ve paid for but not used is £28. As this is less than the cancellation fee they’ve made the fee the same as your unused premium. Therefore you cancel. You pay them no more but you also get no refund. They keep the £28 as the fee that you already paid at the start of the policy.

Thanks Alex.  I do understand what you mean, but that seems such a strange way to show it on the cancellation page.  I did pay annually.

It would have been helpful if they’d added another line underneath saying balance/refund £0 or something.

Just to confirm - Alex is entirely correct.  Just had a reply from them.

We have reduced your cancellation fee to ensure you don't pay more than total annual cost of insurance.

The £28 will taken for the cancellation fee instead if being refunded back to you.

That really needs to be made clearer on the cancellation page imo.
