Spam, no, not that sort! Proper Spam - and Southern Ireland inflation...

Featured Replies

Whilst in a shop in Donegal last week a can of Spam caught my eye as I just could not believe the price of it! When growing up, Spam use to be a budget staple of a cupboard, for that last minute sandwich, or to bulk up a thin vegetable soup. (€6.20 = £5.24) This shop has elevated it firmly to a luxury item! Just to compare, this is the Asda price this morning LOL

I remember spam too. . Mum used to do spam fritters. Soggy batter and dripping in fat/lard. Not exactly my favourite.

Actually I thought of spam fritters when I was on holiday in Jan at gran canaria. Had buffet dinner one evening and what looked like a thin slice of spam was fried in thick batter.

I used to buy, Celebrity brand luncheon meat or chopped ham and pork as fishing bait, made a damn good butty aswell it was 47p a tin, now you cant find it and equivalents are £2.00+ a tin

Yeah, I remember my dad having luncheon meat as fishing bait. Strange bait when you think about it.

On shopping this morning with mum, she bought 8 x cans of 'corned beef' (£1.55/can). I grew up on her making stew with it! LOL

Corned beef fritter with a thin slice of onion or potato, or corned beef hash, most things are better battered lol

wow - we are due over there in May, perhaps I can smuggle some in ..... (Yup, I know, import restrictions and all that)

According to Google spam fritters were a ww2 thing as the fish and chip shops couldn't get fish.

Interestingly, Churchill ensured that fish & chips were never 'rationed', as he knew how important they were for peoples morale...

I should ask my dad when I've got over COVID, he was a child in the war, then got called up to serve in the catering core of the RAF in later years. wonder if he served them then. Could be a funny conversation with him. 🤣🤣.

He did have a chip shop at one point but it burnt down. Probably an explosive spam fritter !

My parents vividly remember rationing during and after the war.

Well that went a bit off topic of how much spam is. 🤣🤣

This topic needs reporting, too much spamming going on .....😬

Not a chance, haribo to get that sugar rush first. Then eat the plate. 😂😂

I got a lot of Spam as a child, both my parents liked it - I believe it was available in WW2 without counting against the meat ration so they got the taste for it then. Similarly my Dad loved corned beef which he got a lot of in the army so I got a liking for that as well.

Still enjoy fried Spam in a bap occasionally these days!😀

I wonder who came up with the name spam and why?
