Strange noise

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this and what it might be. This came completely out of the blue one day whilst driving along at 30mph. It came from the right front wheel and was a sound that is hard to describe. It's not wheel bearings, as I know that sound, it is constant and gets louder the faster you go. This is intermittent, and doesn't happen above 40mph. The best description I can come up with is a woo woo sound, and it disappears as soon as the brake pedal is touched. I'm wondering if the disc is warped maybe? I do feel a pulsing under braking sometimes, so that's my inclination. If any of you guys have experienced this please let me know. I'm going to Blackpool on Tuesday and need to know if I'll be fine doing it, around 190 miles round trip.

I think you've done well to try to describe it in text!  If you can feel it pulsing when braking it probably is disc-related. Could be that the pads are not retreating fully away from the (warped) disc perhaps??? So when you're braking and pushing them onto the disc to make good contact the sound does disappear.

But I think this could be the time for getting up early tomorrow morning and getting it down to a garage so that they can get  it up on a ramp and have a good look at it. Whether you can get it fixed by Tuesday is a different question....

I would attempt to grease the caliper slide pins it sounds like a sticking caliper.

The Blackpool trip was all good. I still haven't checked it out but it was all ok. Nothing seems wrong at all and I got the noise when I was close to home at 30 mph. Wheel temperature was fine, the same both sides. I don't think it's a desperate problem, but definitely one that I'll look into.
