Cold Start Struggles

Hello, I have a stupid question, does the 1.4 petrol version has an EGR valve? I don't find anything on the web. Every morning or every cold start I would say, the car is choking and coughing until it either totally dies or the rpm comes back up from like 200 to 1500 and then it stabilizes at around 1000. I have 200 000km in this 2006 focus and I use it daily for a 3km trip to work then back home, and once or twice per month a 30km trip on a highway. I'm thinking on some "airways" being filled up with goo.

No, it doesn't.

Thank you! So for a petrol engine there are no parts that can be filled up due to driving mainly in city?

Maybe you just need to tuck your car in at nights. Get it one of these to keep it happy .....

Cold start issues you need to start with the battery. Have the battery checked and confirm its correct ratings needed for your car.

IF the battery is good, do as Unofix said, or see if the car has any stored codes.

Thanks for your advice. However, I have a brand new alternator and battery for 4 months now.

I thought it was a joke 😄 hehe

 

However, I doubt these solutions could fix this. In the past I wrote a similar post with a bit of a deep dive. I live in Europe and if I put Shell petrol or any other brand other than OMV (Austrian), the car does this choking at cold starts. If I pour 100 octane racing petrol all of this is resolved it drives like a mad horse with wide open throat. This is why I asked are there any parts which can be filled up with goo due to city driving. Or maybe the purity of the Super 95 octane petrol I get on OMV stations are much more easy to ignite and does not delay.

Yes, I'm just joking 🤣

The crankcase breather hose could do or have a hole in it and the pcv valve on the end of that could be stuck.

If the higher octane petrol makes an instant difference, that suggests there's nothing really wrong with your engine and it is just the fuel.  

These are a very basic engine so there's nothing to clog up as such.  The plugs might get a little sooty.  And if it has a knock sensor, low quality fuel might cause pre-ignition, which the ECU will then correct for and lose a little performance.

Thanks, I'll re-attach it and see if there is any hole on it.

I just did not think that my car is so "fuel specific", but hey, there are no two exact people, why should there be two exact cars? 😏

However, I will change my spark plugs in the coming month either way, they are four years old, but only have 30 000km in them, but I usually change these basic parts and liquids after a time interval because I never reach the km limit, hehe
