Brakes feel like they're vibrating on hill

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wanted to find out if this was normal or not.   So, I noticed when first driving today that when braking slowly while going uphill(so hill assist would engage), I can feel a slight vibration feeling under pedal.  A bit like an abs shudder but not as severe.  I don't feel anything when stopping on a flat, or stopping from faster.  This might have been the case since I first bought the car, I don't know.

The car (64 fiesta Zetec) has only just been bought by me and had new pads and disks fitted before given to me and the inspection says the brakes are good.  I'm assuming it's hill assist engaging.  But wanted to check as I have a warranty.

If you want the 'Hill Start Assist' to engage then you need to apply a firm brake pressure. Softly braking and gently slowing down will cause HSA to not operate and hold you at stand still, Also remember it is only intended to hold the car for a few seconds, long enough for you to pull away.

Hi thanks for this.   I'm good with the operation of hill assist in and off itself and it works just fine.  This isn't the issue.

I just wanted to know about the vibrations I feel.   It was, admittedly, after only driving for s few minutes when I noticed, so maybe something to do with brake fluid?

The vibrations are most probably from the ABS pump. I doubt it will be the brake fluid, but if it's been a few years since it was changed it maybe worth doing. If nothing else it will get the system flushed through and give the ABS pump a good test as the system gets bled.

Not sure when they were changed as I've only had the car myself a month, but I think it's all been done by the garage before purchase.

Am I right to assume it's nothing to worry about?

It might be a little irritating, but I'd say it is quite common and not something to worry about.
