What is the difference between a Parking Light vs Handbrake Light?

Featured Replies

Apologies if it is a silly question, just seen people refer to the two and I was wondering if a car should have a handbrake light AND a parking brake light or either one of the two? I only have one handbrake so just wondering if it also means different levels of engagement with the handbrake?

All the best

Parking light - outside the car - front white and rear red making it visible to others.

Handbrake light on dashboard letting you know the handbrake is engaged (or you've forgotten to take it off).  Only one switch so only one light on the dash.

"parking brake light" is the same as  "handbrake light", I would say.

Cheers Al, cleared it right up for me, top man

As explained above, warning lights for the parking brake and Handbrake are exactly the same. Some countries call it one or the other. This of course is not to be confused with transmission brake when an Auto gearbox is in "Park mode" A car cannot be moved in Park, but it is possible if the parking brake is on. There is no special waring light for Park, it can be P on dash (PRNDL selection).

I was unsure why you had asked the question, so I thought I'd add Auto gearboxes to the answer. Being posted in this section, you could be referring to any car, not necessarily your Fiesta ST, which of course is manual only.
