Lack of power 1.6tdci 2008 focus diesel estate

Featured Replies

Hi one and all,

So as I'm not too mechanically savvy and having read endless chats about what this could be, I've changed or investigated 99.9% of the issues. I've got next to no power when giving it some up a hill, in the higher rev range of the gears and top end speed is about 80mph (eventually).

I've had the following changed/looked at:

EGR, glow plugs, the turbo boost solenoid, can't find any hose leaks, injector seals (one was leaking) turbo looks/sounds healthy, engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter changed, turbo oil feed pipe moves abit (no leaks though) but apparently that's the normal for these engines (not too sure). When idle and warm, it'll rev all the way and in gear/when moving it'll rev all the way but just has no ummph. The DPF was cleaned a while back and that could be the only thing I could think of but I'm getting no fault codes of any sort on Forscan. It doesn't go into limp mode either.

I've also seen it could be clutch related but I've no drama getting it in gear whem the car is on or off so not too sure.

I'm well and truly at a dead end.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Is it a 90 or 110?  90ps in a heavy estate is a bit of a struggle, especially if it's loaded up...fixed turbo rather than VNT on those too so you don't get so much top end.

If it's a 110 then it does sound faulty...  Mine would easily cruise at 90 back in the day.  However, they don't have huge amounts of torque, so if you've come from something like a 1.9/2.0 TDI then it will feel sluggish in comparison.

Hey Tom,

It's the 109bhp engine.  When I first brought the car, it did the same as yours, it would rocket up to 90 no sweat and happily cruise along. I first suffered from a DPF limp mode issue after about a year of having the car and once that was cleaned and sorted all was normal again but as time has gone on, it's got worse and now just chuggs along.

It does sound like the DPF may be getting clogged again then.  The Eolys system never was particularly effective.  I had mine gutted in the end but wouldn't recommend that nowadays.

Do you have Forscan?  If so, can you take some live data of the DPF differential pressure to see how high that's getting both while cruising and under load?

Hi,

Just had a similar issue on my Cmax 1.6 TDCI, Fault was due to a hairline crack on the plastic throttle body. No fault codes only lack of power in the higher gears and going up an incline.

No way, hmm that's interesting, defo got to be worth looking in to. Thanks for that 👍🏼

Here’s a photo of the throttle body, quite difficult to see the crack without the screwdriver pushed in. Only little amount of air escaping on tick over, so give it a good looking at. Only takes about 20 minutes to take it off check it and put it back on.

Throttle body as it came off the car, it was quite dirty, crack only became obvious after a little clean!

ahh I see what you mean by hardly noticable. I will have a check over that and see what state it's in. Really appreciate the help so far everyone 🙂

Sorry for the lack of updates all. I've not driven the car for a few days but replaced the PCV valve on the top of the rocker cover (think thats it) which was split and appeared to be leaking oil slightly. Not sure if it'll make any difference but its another thing that was dodgy and now isn't (hopefully).

Also I was wondering with regards to the throttle body, my engine is slightly different and doesn't have the rubber housing in the pics above but depending on how dirty the MAP sensor might be, would that make any real difference if it was given a clean?

I checked on the forscan log and saw a static regen was also done on the DPF last time it was in the garage (about 2 months ago) so not too sure on it being that now, unless the DPF is actually knackered and needs replacing.

Watch this space 🙂
