PATS 11 fault on MK2 Focus Ghia

Featured Replies

Hi folks

I'm in a bit of a mess, and am hoping for some help.

My 2007 MK2 Focus Ghia had an instrument cluster problem, and I got it repaired by a reputable service.

Battery was old and had been sitting for a time, so after re-installing the cluster the motor cranked but failed to start. Battery wouldn't hold a charge so I installed a new battery.

Now everything on the cluster lights up and the LED shows mileage, temperature and trip distance. But the immobiliser won't disengage so the engine won't crank at all and the PATS light flashes rapidly. After 1 min it flashes a PATS 11 code.

I've tried 2 keys and replaced the key batteries. I've tried disconnecting the car battery for a couple of hours to reset the electrics. I've tried a couple of alarm reset procedures off the web. No joy.

The binnacle Test sequence shows PATS Key Flags 01.

AA have Ford diagnostics but point-blank refuse to attend because MOT expired while I was away. I'm in a rural area and can't get any mobile service to attend. It will cost a fortune to get towed to the nearest electrical specialist and more on top for the check. I'm on a tight income and a repair on such an old car may be uneconomic, so I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to at least diagnose the issue so I can cost the repair.

Is there any way I can diagnose and perhaps even fix this myself? I'd be prepared to spend a little on test equipment. I'm not a car maven so would need access to clear step-by-step instructions, but I'm having trouble finding anything much on Google for this fault.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi,

I had a similar problem on my Focus Cmax, ended up buying a replacement cluster, gem module and ECU off eBay. Make sure the cluster and ECU modules have the same part numbers as yours and that they came off a running car. There’s a lot of these “kits” on eBay. You will loose the odometer reading from your cluster and the car will show the reading of the replacement cluster. Changing the ECU is the hardest bit, on mine it was by the passenger front wheel, behind the wheel arch, and it was secured with an anti theft bolt, I had to grind that off……..

good luck
