2019 Focus Ecoboost 1.5 - clunk when changing from 1st to 2nd (manual gearbox)

Featured Replies

Sometimes, when I change from 1st to 2nd gear, I get a soft "clunk" sound.

It happens at the point when I move the gear lever from neutral to 2nd.

In other words, while the clutch pedal is still down.

it's a long story. But I got the car from Cazoo 3 days ago, and I only have a few days left in which I can return it.

I like the car in general, but the noise worries me.

(I was considering the Mountune M200 remap but I might not even keep the car now...)

The master technician at my local Kwik Fit Plus looked at it today (the Ford dealer could not look at it until next week), and reckoned the clutch was dragging. He said the fluid level was slightly low & topped it up, bled the system (at Cazoo's expense), and told me to see how it goes for a couple of days. He said it might need a new clutch.

I wondered if it was an engine/gearbox mount issue but they said it couldn't be that.

I took it for a drive tonight and it still does it - perhaps 1 time in 3.

I'm not convinced it's much different to before.

The car has done 18000 miles.

Does anyone else have noises when changing gear?

Should I just reject the car? 🤔

(I don't know whether I want the hassle of having the clutch replaced even though Cazoo would be paying — and I don't feel certain it would fix it.)

I have the exact same car as you and have never experienced the symptoms that you describe.

First and second gear ratios are quite long on these cars so I usually I'm doing at least 3000 rpm before I change up.

It is a bit worrying that the Brake/Clutch fluid level (same reservoir) was a bit low, it should not change that much unless the Pads were well worn, even then I doubt that you would notice the level being low. It may have had a fluid change at the two year service and not been topped up correctly or there could be a leak in either the Brakes or Clutch, and if it did need bleed at that age then something is wrong.

Thanks for replying. It's helpful to know it's not normal for these models to do that.

I've been driving since the 80s and this is one of the most refined cars I've ever had — so I started wondering if I'm being too fussy. (Hearing things that might be masked by engine/road noise in other cars.)

Cazoo's 300 point check does not fill me with confidence.

They delivered the car with all the tyre pressures wrong. And one dangerously low - faulty valve which left me at the side of the road.

Cazoo also did the most recent service...

They are lovely cars to drive.

If you have been driving since the 80's then you will not be changing gear at the wrong time. Probably best to sleep on it and await any other responses before making your mind up about what to do.
