petrol gauge

I have a problem with my petrol gauge not working, it is stuck on full, and the trip meter is showing maximum miles on the read out

please help

Are you saying that even after hitting the trip meter reset button, it still remains on maximum miles?

You either have 2 unrelated faults or you have a problem with the solder joints on the instrument cluster.

Did this problem with the fuel gauge and the mileage trip meter happen at the exact same time ? If the answer is yes then I would say it's the well know solder joint problem.

Disconnect the plug from the fuel tank sender unit and see if the gauge goes to zero. If the answer is yes then you have a faulty sender unit in the tank.

The OP says he now has a 61-plate Mk3 so it's unlikely to be the solder problem. AFAIK this only affects Mk2/2.5's.

I'm also unsure if he means the trip reading, or the range reading. 

Range obviously relies on a fuel level input - if that's defaulting to max, the range will also do the same.
