One And one half year ago my daughter bought a Ford focus 2019 with 9000 miles and this week she now can’t get the car into second gear.

To say the least how ***** off am I Four months after a warranty runs out a gearbox goes belly up.

I was just wondering is this something normal or does Ford have to answer a question regarding this

depends on make model, any warranties, recalls, potentially a minefield find out what your rights are, if no joy find a mech to throw a s/h box in it.

It will still be under powertrain warranty with ford so would get it booked in.

See the answer to your other post by Focue and the link to the 5 year Ford cover.

Are you sure that warranty applies over here?  Not just a US thing?

I always thought powertrain was 3 years in the UK.  With exception of the dodgy powershifts that got an extension.

If it has full dealer service history you might get a gesture of goodwill from Ford with it only being a few months after the warranty expires.

It’s not common for it to fail at that low mileage but it can happen and you don’t know how it was driven by the previous owner.

Based on the fault description I guess that the car in question is a Focus MK4 with the 1.0 ECOboost engine.

On a Focus MK4 the 1.0 ECOboost engine is combined with the Ford/Getrag MX65 manual transmission. The MX65 transmission was developed as a low cost replacement of the old IB5 transmission. It was developed as a modular 5/6 speed transmission and is available in 3 different versions. The 1.0 ECOboost is combined with the 6-speed highest power version of the MX65 transmission (6MTT215) which can handle a maximum of 215 Nm of torque.

In combination with the 1.0 ECOboost the MX65 transmission is well known for excessive wear (and even failure) of the synchromesh rings. Especially the synchromesh rings of the second gear which makes shifting to second gear very hard or almost impossible.

Hi Gaby,

I have got exactly the same problem with exactly the same make, model, and year. Please can you tell me if Ford replaced the gearbox for free under the powertrain warranty?

Many thanks, Jean

The extended Powertrain warranty is not available in the UK, so unfortunately UK Ford will not help you unless you pay them lots of money.

If you bought it from a business/dealer then there is also the option of pursuing your consumer rights, but you'd still need to pay for an engineers report to prove it is a manufacturing/design defect.

I have the same issue, mine has gone 3 times in the space of 8 months. First time was at 22k in feb then went in April and has now gone again! 🤬
