MK4 Flat Battery / Won't start

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been away for a week and have tried to start my car and it failed to start. After pushing the start button I had errors errors for steering, brakes, hill start assist. The engine didn't even try to start.

A couple of days before I went away I had an the error "emergency call system malfunction" and intended to get it looked at this week, the car had been starting fine when I left it.

I've tried charging the battery with a ctek charger but when I turn it on I get a ticking noise from just in front of the engine so stopped charging.

Someone has suggested I try jump leads, is it safe to?

The car is a 1.5 petrol, just out of warranty and showing no signs of life, the sync screen doesn't come on and I have to lock the door with the key blade.

Does this sound like a battery issue or a more serious electrical fault?

If you had the emergency call malfunction message it means the modem crashed, it then flattens the battery, I had the same thing.

I got mine going with a jump start no problem. You may get a power steering fault. Let it run for a bit to charge (or just charge the battery) then turn the car off and on and it should sort itself.

There was supposed to be an OTA update to stop it doing this, but the master tech told me which fuse to pull if it does it again to reset the modem before it flattens the battery. F11 on my car from memory I think.

Fwiw, the crashed modem took my battery right down to 3V. The dealer fully charged the battery the next day and its been fine since, even stop start still works when it wants.

The modules and relays will try to start when the car is charging, mine made some odd noises when I connected the booster pack. You can always disconnect the battery to charge it if you prefer.

Thanks,

Daft question because I did try to remove the battery, got the negative terminals off but couldn't see how to get the positive off, is there a clip down the side of the battery? Barely seems any movement on the positive terminal cable.

Got put off jump starting reading this forum as I was going to use a mk3 focus and didn't want to damage it.

Make sure the donor car is not running when you jump then it shouldn’t cause any issues.

I haven’t had the battery out myself so can’t help with that side of things.
