Adblue and Plastic

Featured Replies

Adblue comes in retail packs which are made of plastic - thick plastic, so lots of it!

So - better perhaps to refill my 10 litre container from a pump rather than generate a need for more of the stuff (plastic that is, even if it does go off to the reecycler).

But all I can find regarding Adblue pumps is a search on the BP website, and the nearest places to me (in fact, most of the ones I can find) are near the HGV fuel pumps in motorway service areas.

Anyone in South Birmingham/Worcs (Alcester road direction) know of an off-motorway garage that has an adblue pump? (I'm sure a lot of van and Ecoblue owners use the stuff!)

Thanks - Richard

You could cut the 'middle man out' and just refill your car direct from the pump and not bother with the container. 🤔

That would mean relying on access to Adblue dispensers - the locations of which outside the motorway service areas aforementioned is not easy to find. I prefer a little more control by just stocking-up then filling on the drive.

Having not had a car that uses Adblue, but drive trucks that use it, I have a couple of questions.

1. How big is the tank.

2. How often do you have to fill it?

You can buy 10 litre containers from many places online or farm supplies etc but it only has a shelf life of 18 months so may not be economically viable 🤷

Tank holds about 10.8 litre

Lasts about 6000 to 7000 miles

So a 10 litre container would be ideal then?

Bound to be cheaper, and more environmentally friendly, to buy it that way.

My car currently has just under 14,000 miles on the clock. I've owned it since it was 3 months old (came with a quantity of adblue already in the tank) and in that time I've used 2 adblue 10 litre containers (about £15 each). The car still has about half a tank left. It's not a problem to use the containers, but since I live very near to a Motorway service station that now has an Adblue pump I'll check out the price and maybe just fill up there if it works out cheaper.

Not mine, unfortunately - towing a caravan makes the Adblue consumption shoot up!

In my previous work we used to use Shell garages for adblue as they were the only ones with it on a pump at the time.

Other than that it was either Mongos supermarket or the independent garage on the A180 heading in or out of Grimsby.

Well - I've just answered my own question - there's a pump within a couple of miles of home!

Its on the Alcester Road between ***** (see o cee kay ess) Moors leisure centre and the Maypole South Birmingham (Junction with Warstock Road) - there's Spar filling station in front of the new Lidl - said filling station has an Adblue pump, with a car-sized space to pull in and fill up. 125.5p/litre. Pre packaged round here its about £18:50 - £20 for the 10 litre container.

So when my stocks have been used up, no more big plastic containers for me!

Oddly I've driven past this place dozens of times, but it was only today when cycling past after dropping off the Focus for its service that I noticed the pump. Must mean something ...

This thread has been an education to me, I never realised that diesel cars need to be dual fueled! How did manufacturers ever get away with this weird fueling arrangement?

It's all in the name of saving the Dolphins. It was inverted by tree huggers, but when you add all the extra industry that has grown up to manufacture/distribute and of course the plastic containers the overall reduction in true real world savings is most  likely negative. The first car I had that used AdBlue was a 2016 Discovery Sport, and Land Rover had reduced the size of the fuel tank so as to accommodate the extra AdBlue tank which meant lots of extra trips to the filling station adding to even more emissions.     😧

Use the bike more often then you won't need as much adblue.....

Thing that intrigues me about Adblue is, how and why did someone first think 'I wonder what would happen if we added pig pee to the exhaust fumes of diesel vehicles' 🤷

Fun fact - NOx is created by too many Oxygens in the exhaust (lean AFR).  Urea is basically Hydrogen & Nitrogen...  Turns NOx into plain Nitrogen (N) & water (H2O).    It's such a simple & effective system...just a shame it's so 'bulky' to add another tank to passenger cars, and requires regular driver refills.

I think it deals with about 75% - 80% of the NOx in this way.

BTW - since I've learned about Adblue, I now understand why trucks smell like pee in the MSA car parks. Why do I park in the lorry park in motorway service areas? - 'cos some of them send you intop there if you have a caravan, not much fun walking into the cafe with a couple of small children in tow! Another reason for parking there of course is solo cars parked in the caravan spaces ...
