Featured Replies

Power steering suddenly went solid. Plenty of oil in it. Want to check fuse but handbook doesnt show it should have elec assisted steering, but it does. Anyone any ideas. 2005 mk 6 with 1.6 tdci engine

Not electric ?

I had a 2007 1.6tdci fiesta. It was a hydraulic rack but with electric pump. The pump was under the battery or thereabouts.  No idea where fuse was though. I recall the Ford handbook had an error where they labelled windscreen washer reservoir and hydraulic steering fluid tank around wrong way in my handbook

The Fiesta fuseboxes have diagrams inside them.  I'd expect the EHPAS to need a beefy fuse in the engine bay fusebox, but wouldn't rule out a cabin fuse so would check both.  If you can't see an obvious picture (steering wheel or similar!) post a couple of pictures of the fusebox diagrams and hopefully one of us can work it out.

I must admit though, the problem with the EHPAS is usually damaged wiring near the motor.

I have worked on a 2004, 2006, and 2008 Fiesta (all of them petrol engines) and replaced the power steering pump on the 06 and 08 models. All of them had hydraulic steering pumps driven off the belt. There was no electric assistance.

Diesels are the only ones with EHPAS in the Mk6.   Pump is mounted below the NS headlight.

Thanks for the heads up Tom. I suspected that the diesels might be different but I've never had anything to do with them.

I had to replace the power steering pump on the 2008 ST twice in less than a year before I got one that wouldn't squeal when hot.

There was an aftermarket reservoir relocation kit for the ST, as they were notorious for boiling the PAS fluid!

🤣 I found that out after I changed the pump for the second time .... too late !!

We sold the car a few months later so perhaps the next owner will have upgraded it.

Only the 1.6 diesel has the electric pump, 1.4 diesel is belt driven traditional pump iirc.

Correct!  I think it may have been needed to drop the last few CO2's to get them into the £30 tax bracket.  Seems a lot of effort to go to for just one engine otherwise. 🤔

Not hard.  1 high pressure pipe screwed in.  1 low pressure pipe clamped on.  (Impossible to refit the wrong way).  Plus two electric plugs.  The wiring can get brittle and crispy at the plugs so I'd take more care over that than the pipework.

Doesn't need to be drained, just place a container underneath when you remove the pipes.
