After long journey in heavy urban traffic car loses power, goes into limp mode

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hope someone can throw some light on this.

I have had my 52 Reg Mondeo Estate Zetec 2.0l petrol manual since 2008. It has given me good service but in April 2019 started giving me trouble. The car drives well normally but after a long journey in heavy, urban traffic it suddenly starts losing power, especially if going even slightly uphill, and goes into limp mode causing me to stop and quickly find a parking spot for safety rearons. The code reader shows "P0171 System too lean Bank1". When I lift the bonnet a draft of extremely hot air blows out (almost as if coming from a blast furnace) even though the temperature gauge on the panel reads normal. If I now sit in the car for at least an hour and then start up, the car drives perfectly normally once again! And continues to drive normally the next day.

This has happened about 5 times since April 2019.

I have attached a derailed description of events if anyone would like to know what lead up to this,

Many thanks

Sim

Apologies for the unreadability of the first attachment. It was originally written in well formatted MS Word but since this is not an accepted file type here I copied and pasted the contents into Notepad, which did not show line breaks. I have since manually inserted line breaks and uploaded the .txt file once again
