Poor MPG 2004 1.6Ti

Featured Replies

Hi, 2004 (2005 plate) Focus 1.6 Ti. Had it for a couple of months now and am very disappointed in the MPG. I only do around town driving so I expect it to be lowish but 25.3 is a bit painful with petrol prices being what they are at the moment!

It only has 34K miles on it but a poor service history. It had an oil change earlier this year. I have replaced plugs and air filter and ran a fuel system cleaner through it. My (cheapo) code reader shows no faults.

Wheels spin freely when jacked so not binding brakes.

Any other ideas as to why? Or is this considered normal?

I'd say that's about normal given the engine type and the age of the vehicle. You will probably reach 30mpg on a decent run at a steady 60 mph

Thanks @unofix Looks like I will have to live with it. I should have mentioned that I am on Asda fuel; some people swear they get better mpg from better fuel (Shell, BP etc).

The fuel octane rating is very tightly controlled in the UK, the only difference if there is any is the cleaning additives that are allegedly added by the different companies. Over the many years of driving I've tried them all and never found a consistently measurable difference between supermarket or branded fuel. At the moment I either fill up at Tesco or at Esso and I find zero difference between the two, only the price !
