Going to our Second home in Ireland Friday night. Driving there in my new car :) Me, Mum, dad, Lotsa luggage,(pressure washer, cleaning stuff included) fulled loaded.

Leeds > Holyhead > Dublin > Southern Kerry

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=leeds%20to%20lixnaw&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Thats most of the route, theres about another 30 miles after that, the place isnt on the map though.

So, about 450miles on one tank, 3 people, fully loaded, AC on proberly, all in one day.

What do we think :) I think it will easy get there on one tank. My dad disagrees but wont put money on it and my mum disagrees and is happy to lose bets against me all the time.

My cars spent proberly 75%-80% of its time in the city and is averaging 37.8 mpg. I say on the motorway this will go up as it shows steady instant mpg from 50-80 depending on speed and elevation etc.

I think that's a tiny bit ambitious. Our diesel struggles to do 400 on one tank with one maybe two people in, AC on and no luggage. Maybe that's to do with the way it's driven ;) Computer says 51-52 mpg...

Good luck, and let us know if you make it :D (I bet you a virtual fiver you don't make it  )

not a chance m8ty on a run mine strugles 300 miles ... ;) ;) :)

+1

its not the most economical of engines

EASY! B)

Just nicely eco-mode it there and it'll be possible.

i done nottingham and back on half a tank then 2 days to college :) bit less like lol but its a good few hours drive and i had just above half tank

Indeed, If I just drive like a normal person(as aposed to how i drive normally- theres a slight difference ;) )

I reckon it will get there. It does do 60mpg on the motorways, 10 gallon tank, thats 600 miles. thats plenty of room for calculation errors.

WIll let you guys know anyway

and that aint accounting for whats in the pipes does it, like from tank to engine, from the filler cap to tank and that

60 MPG from a 1.6 petrol? you pushing it down hills for that? I think you will run out and a refuel will be needed after about 340 miles.

If you keep it below 3k revs and drive with economy in mind you can do 450 out of a tank easy. I've managed it before - on one single run you're even more likely to suceed. Travelling at 60mph on the motorway instead of 70 makes a huge difference, although it will take you an extra hour to get there.

really !!! our 1.4 tdci does 70 mpg at a steady 60 mph so i doubt it matey :)

i reckon the whole journey there ull avarage 48 mpg :)

not even, i'd say you'd be lucky to break 40mpg!!

I am driving very well at moment in my ZS to see what I can eek out of my tank.

From full I have done 299 miles and the computer says I have 110 miles to empty

The link to google maps says its 406 miles (plus your 30 extra),but 66 of those miles are sat on the ferry with the engine swiched off.

So its only a challange to do 370 miles on a tank.

9 gallon tank 370 miles ,If you get 42 mpg+ you will easily do it.

I get 330miles out of it driving around the city and I certainly dont drive economically.

Really. Obviously it fluctuates as its the instant mpg, On the motorway ive noticed its more economical @ 60 than 70, but its also more economical at 80 rather than 70(though not as much as 60) Strange.

Yes its a 1.6 petrol that means its hanging around the 3000rpm makr but theres where its most comfortble etc.

All you guys need to flick to your instant mpg, and just have a relaxed cruise down the motorway and you will get steady readings. I dont brake on motorways I plan way ahead helps me not have to slow down and what not. I dont even try really Its just habit on motorways unless im giving it a poke with a stick at perhaps a few leptons more than the speed limit...

Flooring it in 5th @ 70mph results in my mpg going from what ever to about 17mpg :)

Flooring it in lower gears(2nd, 3rd) can bring it down to about 12mpg.

Will be intersting to see how much the weight will bring the mpg down by. The above are unladen(or two people in the car) not 3 and luggage. Still think il make it just.

Setting of 5am tonight. Should be fun. You wont be able to find out until I get on the web again, not sure when that will be.

Tar very much :)

ford official figures state 55mpg for extra urban, we know how optimistic manufacturers figures are.

so with that in mind:

450 miles with average of 55mpg (you'll never achieve that though as that's assuming every yard of the journey is on extra urban).. this means you'll need 8.18 gallons of fuel at a cost of £41.99. this is the most optimistic outcome, you won't get better than this. you say your trip goes up to 60/70mpg, that's fair enough but when you work it out with real worl maths i think you'll find over a tank it won't come close. i'm keeping a spread sheet on my costs and mpg and so far i've seen 54mpg my highest result. this is the derv i'm running too.

on paper you'll be close, but in te real world i think you'll run out. especially as ford 55mpg max figure would have been worked out on a dyno with no drag, no passengers, no AC and at a steady 55mph.

please do post your results, i'm looking forward to finding out what happens either way :)

How do you change the readout to instant rather thAn average mpg then?

on my ZS i have an instant and an average mpg when scrolling through the options using the end of the stalk. didnt have this on my zetec (was a 58 plate, my ZS is a 10 plate)

There's no instant MPG on our 59 titanium either :(

not on our 59 1.4 tdci either :(

My 2008 titanium has instant, not average, if I floor it, it goes down, drive sensible, it goes up, but slower than it goes down, I average 300 in my 1.6 TDCI.

Over the last few weeks, I have been driving to and from work (12 mile each) sensible, 0-60 in about 20 seconds, and not 5, I actually got from the usual 37 to 47, but a weekend in the dales, at the Masham Steam Fair killed it, at present, it's hovering at 39.9, might reset in morning, see if I can keep the magic 47, which was an improvement of around 10 miles, so 2 trips 2 and from work (48 miles) I was saving myself 40 miles!

Not sure what people mean by instant mpg, but if you press the left stalk until the display shows the mpg then hold it in it resets the mpg display thus giving an 'instant' mpg figure on release. Have seen my TDCi up to about 67 or so doing this on a 50 mph road :D . Of course once you boot it a bit more or go into a 30 zone this figure tends to come down as the mpg averages out.

Average for me right now is around 51 mpg with a good mix of 30, 40, 50 & 70 limits. Did notice the average mpg was lower in winter, but maybe this was because the engine was a a bit newer then or because of the colder starts & the fact you use lights & heating a lot more

Must say 37 mpg seems very low for the 1.6 TDCi as an average figure, you must really accelerate through the gears to get it that low

And as for 0-60 in 5 seconds

Also, I reckon the Zetec S should give a lower mpg due to the lower suspension, bodykit & diffuser giving better aerodynamics.
