Essentially yes. The only thing I can think of is that the battery was so knackered that it was taking all the current the alternator could generate but was still not coming up to the normal voltage. However if that is correct I'm surprised that such a battery could start the car after an overnight wait.

Exactly, thats what i can't figure out, it started on the money.
