Occasional gear stuck in 1st or reverse

Featured Replies

Hi, i have a 64 plate ford fiesta with approx 36000 miles on it.

The gears have been occasionally getting stuck in 1st or reverse and will only release when I switch the engine off, also I’ve had an instance 3 times where the clutch is pressed fully in and my car stalls as if I’ve not push the clutch in. Any ideas please?

clutch worn out

Sounds expensive

Looks like the clutch is dragging. Get a professional opinion though 36,000 miles is a bit early for a worn clutch unless you do naughty things like holding it stationary on hills with the clutch instead of the hand brake.

it is unless you no someone who can do it ☹️

Take a look at this:

Do these symptoms match yours?

I have no idea if any of that is applicable to your problem, but it was all I could find when researching my particular problem.

When a clutch wears out it normally slips not drags.  I did have one where it was intermittently dragging badly. In the end I dismantled and found the fulcrum ring in the pressure plate had broke and was moving about causing intermittent problems. That car had a cable clutch so it was not a hydraulic problem. Katherine’s problem might be a hydraulics problem.

From the symptoms described it's most likely a problem with the master cylinder. I don't think a failing slave cylinder would give this kind of intermittent fault and a worn clutch definitely wouldn't. It would be worth making sure the fluid level is correct in the reservoir, in case air is getting into the lines, and getting the system bled and checked for leaks.

I agree with Mike that this is most probably a hydraulic problem and not a worn clutch. I tend to think it could be the clutch slave cylinder as they do have a bit of a reputation with intermittent problems because of there location inside the bell housing meaning they get very hot.

As Mike has said start by checking the clutch fluid level and look for signs of any leaks around the master cylinder (it's not possible to view the slave cylinder).

Thanks all, I’m going to take it to a gearbox/clutch specialist

We have same issue as Katherine with our 64 plate 70000 mile 1.25 Fiesta Studio.

Were not sure we have a hydraulic clutch? Somewhere else we saw it could be worn gear selector forks? If so what solution?

Yes you have a hydraulic clutch.

As said above the issue is most probably the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder.
