Start/stop don't work

Featured Replies

Hi people!!

I have a 65 plate fiesta, & the start/stop intermittently doesn't work, (i know it wont if engine isnt warm enough or going slow speed) & won't work when the heated windscreen is on, or in reverse it is still under warranty, go got it booked in, but just wondered if any of you lot know the possible cause, or why it's doing (or not doing!) this??

THANKS 😊

If you search 'Stop / Start' or similar combinations of those words you can read over 2000 threads on the subject.

Having just gone through the list of Stop/Start inhibitors, there are a total of 140 conditions that have to be correct on the Focus MK4 before it will work. Many as you might expect are to do with the battery, the load on the alternator and the battery temperature. Other things that inhibit the system that might not be so obvious is things like the steering angle sensor or cabin heating (or cooling). Given the vast list of conditions it is more of a surprise that it ever works.

It is designed to work only when the vehicle thinks it is appropriate, not when you would like it to.

Just try doing an internet search using your favourite search engine such as "stop/start not working Ford owners club" to bring up a selection of the hundreds of threads on here about this topic!😀

Most likely going to be the battery.

I’ve got my 2019 focus booked in this Friday for the same issue. When I went and booked it in, they tested the battery and it’s at 30%. It needs to be 70% or above for stop start to work apparently. They’re going to overnight charge that battery and reset the sensors and have told me that should cure it.
Possibly the same with yours?

Surely we're about due for a Maypole recommendation by now?😀

I'm starting to think we should add stop/start to the profanity filter.

I wish mine would pack up, it would save me the trouble of switching it off.

Just to help the noobie out, here is the definitive post on start/stop created by our own in house expert on the topic, @unofix

Perhaps the Moderators could keep it pinned so it's always the first topic that's seen 🤷‍♂️

People don't read pinned topics.  There's a weird subconscious thing of skipping straight past them.

There's been a massive 'announcement' box with general chat posting rules top right for the last few years...I'd bet even most of the regulars have missed that!

Isnt that the point of pinning topics though ?

I wouldn't of thought a frequent visitor/poster would start a new topic about "Stop start not working" 🤔

Yes, but it's based on a theoretical idea that doesn't work in practice.

Even new posters miss them.  I've done it myself on other forums.  The front page of a new forum is visually overwhelming so the brain tries to cut out any unnecessary guff and just searches the newest posts as they're perceived to be most relevant.

It picks up on the 'block' of normal posts and then finds the top one of those.  Even when the pinned post is directly above that, it can still easily be missed!

The search function on here (and lots of other forums that appear to use similar software) isn't great either. I usually advise using your normal search engine and inserting "Ford Owners Club" somewhere in the search and it usually works. As a new user, you're not going to know that.

Thank you all for your input

.. much appreciated!

Why do people worry about it, I'd be more worried if it didn't start. I always switch mine off as soon as I get in the car.
