Fiesta ST MK8 new owner - a few questions!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just recently picked up a 3 year old MK8 ST3 loving the car but have a few questions if anyone could help. I noticed that both front headlights have a small area of mist/condensation (see pics) - is this normal or should I get back in touch with the garage? Also I have an area of the black trim on the rear passenger door (drivers side) which appears to be slightly loose/popping off slightly - is this a common issue? (passenger rear door is fine) I did mention that to the dealership but it looks like the glue they've used isn't strong enough and it appears the plastic is warped slightly so won't stay in place.

Also is there a setting somewhere so the doors "auto lock" when driving? I had a good look in the menus but couldn't see it.

Thanks in advance - Nick

Condensation/mist  on Mk 8 lights seems common in certain weather conditions. Seen it on mine several times over the last 5 years without any apparent harm.

Not seen the trim issue.

Afaik there's no "auto lock" on the Mk 8.

One you haven't mentioned - but no light to indicate the alarm is set either.

You need to update your profile with new car details, btw!😀

Thanks buddy - so would you say that condensation is normal then? I'll keep an eye on it. I'll get my profile updated!! 😄

I'd be more inclined to go back to the seller about the trim issue but if you're doing that no harm in mentioning the condensation at the same time. Not caused me any problems though.

Thanks, garage have been perfect and have ordered replacement trim. I did mention the headlight issue and said I would keep an eye on it. Just curious whether anyone else had similar issues? The car has just had guard X done and been washed prior, no obvious signs of water ingress from what I can see. Almost looks more of a mist under each one, very unusual for 2 to fail on a 3 year old ST I would think? It's not cleared in the two hours I've been home so I'll check it again tomorrow.

Alright mate. I would say the condensation is normal. My Focus ST suffers with it after I've washed it but over a few hours it goes, seen it on other cars that aren't Fords too. If it gets worse then I would flag it but if it's always in the same place, then nothing major I'd say.

Make sure the dealer sorts the trim out, definitely not a common problem so needs sorting.

In regards to Auto-Locking, Ford don't allow any Ford in the UK to auto-lock (I'm sure someone on here could tell us why) but the car is capable of doing it. I've enabled them on mine and they work a treat. You need a Windows laptop, ForScan (https://forscan.org), a OBD cable capable of reading newer Fords (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0952P4MLP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One of us can talk you through it, takes a few mins but please only do it if you feel capable of doing it. You can screw the car up if you change things you shouldn't. Just a friendly warning as I'd hate to ruin someone else's ST 🙂

DM me if you want to go ahead and talk you through it (not as scary I've made it sound promise)

Hello mate thank you! Thankfully the garage have been helpful re the trim and have agreed to replace it. Are you aware how the trim  is removed/re-applied? Curious whether it's glue or if it just clips into place? They have tried to glue it when I flagged it up during the test drive but the glue isn't holding, it does look warped to me.

Thanks for the clarification re the auto-lock! Absolutely loving the car, it's also got the pan roof.

What sort MPG do people get? and how many miles does yours show from being filled?  Do you get any loss of performance using normal mode over sport?

It's definitely a nice upgrade from my MK7 in molten orange! 🙂

Same here. I did stumble across this article on the subject in general:

https://www.carlightblog.com/2018/10/23/condensation-in-your-headlights-is-nothing-to-worry-about/

But there has been a thread on here, though the pics in the thread look nothing like what I would call "condensation" :

HEADLAMPS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is there condensation in the headlamps?
  • Headlamps have vents to accommodate normal changes in air pressure. Condensation can be a natural by-product of this design. When moist air enters the lamp assembly through the vents, there is a possibility that condensation can occur when the temperature is cold. When normal condensation occurs, a fine mist can form on the interior of the lens. The fine mist eventually clears and exits through the vents during normal operation.
How much condensation is acceptable?
  • The presence of a fine mist, for example no streaks, drip marks or large droplets. A fine mist covers less than 50% of the lens.
How long does it take for the acceptable condensation to clear?
  • Clearing time can take as long as 48 hours under dry weather conditions.
How much condensation is unacceptable?
  • A water puddle inside the lamp. Streaks, drip marks or large droplets present on the interior of the lens.

Pretty sure it clips into place but not 100% sure. Glue doesn't seem the best way to keep that on a car, with the hot summers we have lately.

Ah glad to hear it, mine is also rocking the pan roof (or the Moon Roof as Ford call it ha) Never owned the Fezza version but I get 43 Motorway, and around 28 on normal roads. Booting it gives around 23 over the space of ten mins.

You will 100% see a difference going from normal to sport. Throttle response being one of them. Sport opens the taps on the entire car, so 100% you will notice a difference. Try putting your foot down and whilst its booting it, switch to sport and you'll see what I mean 😛

Thanks buddy, I'm sure I read normal mode shuts off a cylinder to preserve fuel but don't quote me on that. I've kept it in sport mode for now, lovely car I must say! Love that green ST of yours, stunning colour!

Thanks buddy, which page was that on? Been searching through mine, must have missed it!

Lighting -> General Information page 82 of the PDF downloaded manual

EDIT: Actually the download PDF is for 2021 build but it's the same in the HTML manual for the 2019 build Fiestas

Ah yeah it does! Once it’s at a certain speed for roughly 1 min, it will knock off a cylinder and possibly shut the grille off at the front of yours has the active grille fitted

Sorry to pester with another question!

just nipped out to do some food shopping and noticed when opening the boot it doesn't really spring up it seems to need a good nudge, is that normal on these as well?

Yeah the struts are pretty relaxed for the want of a better word. I've fitted aftermarket struts to mine from Emerald Struts. It means the boot release button on your key makes the boot pop right up (Kinda like an auto boot)

Oh that looks great. I honestly can't believe how relaxed it is, I'll try and get a video up tomorrow. It only really works when you've pushed it 3/4 the way up. I may have to get my mechanic to fit me some of those above!

Hello,

Please see video, just wondered if this is normal or do the struts need replacing?

@LukeJQuinn

Looks normal to me - perfectly balanced. My brand new Titanium is similar.

Mine's the same - never really thought about it tbh. If it wouldn't stay open and crashed down on my head I might be bothered, though!

You could try some lubrication on the hinges. It should help a little in the short term but will probably not as much as you would like.

Thanks all if it's normal I'll probably grab some of the emeraldstruts...do they need declaring to insurance as they are technically a "mod" ?
