MK4 EcoBoost - Wet belt & Oil changes

Featured Replies

Hey All,

Just curious, do the new MK4 EcoBoosts still use a wet belt?

Also, is it still recommended to not flush the system and follow the same rules as the MK3 regards (obviously) using the right oil etc etc. Bought the car from TrustFord on 10k but guessing it’s never been serviced since it left the factory…

Thanks

Not the problemed cam wet belt no. It’s chain in the mk4.

The oil pump is still belt driven and while that’s not known to cause issues, I’d still avoid engine flushes.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. As someone who is clueless about engines…what’s the difference between an engine flush and and oil change?

ie: is there any gotchas I need to be aware of when changing oil on the MK4?

The 'engine flush' refers to a bottle of fluid that you can put into the engine during the oil change procedure. It helps break down very old sludgy oil to help get it out of the engine.

If you're regularly changing your oil then an oil change should simply require opening the drain plug on the bottom to let the old stuff just flow out into a container, replacing the plug, renewing the filter, and putting the new oil in. But if the oil is not changed regularly and gets into a more syrup-like state then using a bottle of 'flush' can help get the old stuff out.

Brill. Thanks for confirming 😊

@alexp999 Are you certain the all Mk4 Focus have the chain instead of the wet belt??

I am considering a 2022 1.0 125 (Facelifted version, non MHEV) and I am trying to find out for sure if it has the wet belt or not.

Thanks

Yes, even more so for a 2022, that will be chain.

You can always check the engine bay to be 100% sure. If the turbo is at the back towards the cabin then it is chain.

Thanks Alex.

Actually I don't have access to the car so can't physically check.

I could get the engine number from the seller, will that allow me to be 100% sure?

Easier to ask for a picture of under the bonnet I should think.

The engine number is the last part of the VIN, but I don't know anyway for non Ford employees to look up what it is.

Yes, pretty sure we've never heard of a wet belt on a Mk 4 on here, and I recall all the road test reports at the time of launch were emphatic that all Focus 4s had the revised chain cam engine.

All chain
