Advice on Changing Auto Gearbox oil

Featured Replies

Have decided to tackle this job myself after getting ridiculous quotes and many local garages not wanting to even touch it. Also I've just replaced my power steering fluid with the Turkey Baster method and it worked great. But some youtubers say don't change it because it will just make the old gearbox start slipping? Any advice on the best way to go about it- is it a hard job? Any YouTube links?

What automatic gearbox has your car got ?

No idea but the Reg is DV55 CFX Don't know if it's been changed before and currently 115,000 now Scotty the YouTuber says maybe better to leave it but it's started to make A lot of strange noises

Dave can probably tell what gearbox it is.

4F1E,

there is no drain plug you have to remove the sump to remove the oil and to get to the filter.

Search youtube on how to change it

Providing you use the correct oil (which will probably be MERCON V) it won't cause any issues

Thanks I left the car into a local mechanic two months back at 9:00 am and he rang me at 3pm to say he couldn't do the job because it was very risky procedure and if it wasn't done by a Ford Technician the gearbox could easily be damaged especially if over filled- I found this highly suspicious When I returned at 3pm my car was running in the garage courtyard with the bonnet open?

I checked the oil level today when the engine was warm (by Haynes Manual) and the level was well above the MAX Level but looked red and very clean. I think this mechanic did the job but over filled with oil and decided to say he wouldn't do the job because of this and if the box fails three miles down the road because of the pressure of too much oil he could just say nothing to do with him why else would they have my car for so long before ringing me. Do you think I'm being paranoid wouldn't be the first time!

I'm thinking of trying to take some oil out by the dipstick port but the gearbox has been not bad last two months so may just leave it - what do you think?

I've no experience of autos but if it were me I'd definitely try to remove the excess. I've done it when my garage has overfilled the engine after an oil change.

@tesco500 yeah, pull some out
