1.0L EcoBoost mHEV worth it?

tbh I agree that a Honda or Toyota would be a better choice to get a full hybrid, but I just don't really like any of the options they have. I wasn't going with the Fiesta because of the hybrid option, I just wanted a Fiesta and wasn't sure if I should get the mHEV version since it was one of the available options. I don't really mind the Yaris GR Sport, so just looked at the hybrid version of that and it piqued my interest, but just realised it's only available in automatic which I don't really want, but maybe that's not reason enough to rule it out completely. DriveTheDeal have a really good offer where the GR sport would be cheaper than the Fiesta

The auxiliary belt needs/advised renewing every 4 years now or around 75k miles. I didn't realise until I checked the service schedule this weekend.

Manual trans are starting to become a thing of the past.Auto trans are so good these days & very reliable.Of course you have issues with them, but a lot seem to be have sorted these days.

Proper hybrids are all automatic.  It's only mild hybrids that aren't.

I agree with you though, people are getting caught up on the word 'hybrid' with the newer Fords.  The MHEV engine is a decent choice, particularly the 155, the electric boost gives it more than enough torque, even in the heavy Focus.  Just don't think of it as a 'hybrid', think of it as an additional electric turbo...

I like that idea, it's a far more accurate description of how it works 👍

Yes, lots of manufacturers  including VW/Audi, Suzuki, and Fiat have been using similar technology for quite a while, but only Ford seem to attempt to make a big "thing" of it. Yes, I like the "electric turbo" analogy too.

I quite like the Yaris myself, though have only driven the larger Corolla. I did get the vibe from that, that the GR Sport** versions are mainly about "sporty" cosmetics unlike Ford's ST-Lines which do get a different suspension tune. I have read a few test reports that suggest the big wheels on the GR Sport Yaris rather spoil the ride without doing anything much for the handling.

**Not to be confused with the 261bhp 4wd GR Yaris which is a rather different proposition!)

Everyone I k now who has had the 1.1 have said it is bloomin awful.

Wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, plus not very good on fuel, because you have to thrash it to get anywhere. Plus, I have heard they eat clutches.

Many other manufacturers are available BTW

E.G a Toyota Yaris Hybrid will do up to 70 MPG around town

I've had a 1.1 85ps Zetec for the last few years from new and have found it very good. Done everything I have needed it for very well and never let me down. I get its not everyone's cup of tea and it's a shame they have now down tuned it to 75ps. Someone I know has just got a new one and says there's barely any noticeable difference between the two.

I have the 155 version and like it a lot. I take my wife, six foot teenager, dog and a boot full of luggage on 2.5 hour drive up to the Northumberland coast and am glad I have that extra boost.

I don't like the sport setting though. It is too "Jack Russell" for me in the lower gears.

In the UK price list, the lower powered Ecoboost went from 100ps to 95ps for a while, now it's back to 100ps, don't know if there were any physical differences.

The wife's 2022 (manufactured March '22) Fiesta 1.0 95 hp FlexFuel (non mHEV) has the cylinder head reversed and the turbo behind the engine.

Just looking back.on this thread, we now have had two other members with revised (but non-MHEV) engines in the 95ps version, with photo evidence.

It is looking as if the 95ps (which wasn't in the price list for long) was the revised engine, but Ford went back to the wet belt when the lower powered Ecoboost reverted to 100ps.

When I say between the two I mean the 85ps and 75 ps variants of the 1.1.

Yes, I think the 75 only loses about 3Nm of torque and takes just under a sec longer 0-62, so you probably wouldn't really notice driving normally.

I had a 2017 1.1 mk8 from new for six years and had no issues with the clutch or anything else and never felt the need to thrash it. It's no rocket ship but for mainly urban driving I never found it lacking. I suppose it comes down to expectations and what people want from a car. Anyway, as I do less miles now I found it good enough to buy another new one this month with a good deal and it drives very nicely.

I'm puzzled - you had a 2017 Fiesta for 6 years, your new Fiesta will be a 2023, so what's the mystery 2020 Ford on your profile? Secret Shelby Mustang or just a slip of the finger?😀

Just an error. Something I'll get round to updating on profile.

This is the crucial point.  These are designed for town driving.  Not good for merging from short 70mph slip roads or overtaking tractors on B-roads.

Which takes us back to the original theme of the thread!😀

We (or rather my Mrs) have had various low powered cars e.g. Ka, 1.25 Fiesta, currently Seat Mii, which were/are absolutely fine for town work if that is all you do.

I've always favoured cars with a bit more go on the basis that they give far more confidence in those situations you mention, and, as my very tatty old copy** of the police roadcraft manual says, you spend less time in the "zone of danger".

(**As an aside, I bought this in the late 60s (3s6d!) and didn't know I still had it until doing a bit of a clearout and found it at the back of a bookcase!).

I don't go back to the 60s, best old car publication I have is a 1993 Ford model range brochure. Wish I had kept my old late 1980s one which I collected in my mouth.
