Mk2 petrol cap tether, can you buy one?

Featured Replies

Yes, I know I can get a replacement petrol cap at about £20, but I don't need one. I only need the tether, which will be about 10p of rubber retailing at £5! Does anyone know if you can buy it separately? I've done numerous searches all to no success...

Ah !!! you want one of these ......

That looks just the job, do you have a link to the actual sales site, also, is it for the focus as the fixing of the tether to the fuel door looks different?

Just added the site to the original reply.

They are normally held to the car by a plastic push in rivet. Diffecult for me to tell from your photo but is the plastic peg not detachable from the strap ?

I wish Stephen had posted this months ago - my searches failed too, so my broken tethers from both Fiesta and Fusion ended up in the bin, complete with plastic rivets......

The trick to finding them is knowing what the full name for the item is. Then it's easy after that, you can even get them from Amazon for about £11

I'm laughing my head off here, was about to buy, put in my postcode, and look at the cost of shipping LOL Could buy a bl**dy EasyJet ticket cheaper to go and pick it up  Dam rip off merchants...

It's ***** down right now, will measure tomorrow if dry... thanks

I had to replace mine too , on my old MK2 , the actual tether was listed as a replacement Volvo S40 item but the link is ancient history from my eBay purchase history .

Now measured, it is indeed 70mm, however the listings I have seen all seem to be missing a 'grommet' to attach the tether to the fuel door. Anyone know why this is? (The original can't be used as it's one piece fitted moulding which can't be transferred to a new tether).

Not only does that idiot firm not ship to NI (for goodness knows what racist reasons), I want to keep the original cap as it has some lovely BP logos on it LOL

It's a strange coincidence that you should post this thread yesterday.

I picked up a replacement fuel cap from a breakers yesterday as the strap was missing on mine. The push and twist mechanism was also faulty so some sometimes it could be a pain to remove.

I also got the missing protective covers with clips for the GEM, as well as the plastic surround for the rear seat fold button which was missing. They charged £10 for the lot.

The tether and cap I bought look exactly like this one. The clip that holds it to the flap arm is part of the tether.

Was just about to link that one!  Looks like petrol & diesel use the same cap, just the pipe that's a different size.

Some of them seem to say diesel on them in yellow letters.

Or there's this one  (Don't tell anyone it's a Volvo part !) Nudge nudge , wink wink !

Indeed, as suggested many posts ago LOL I know, once a thread reaches a certain length, it's a real pain to read it all.  Nudge nudge, wink wink...

Likewise , I missed that one too ! 😄
Btw , I found the original (fuel cap tether) seller from my eBay feedback for the sum of £6.99 + whatever postage was then , it's 'parts_monster' . I think you've posted a link of theirs here too . 👍

I've actually messaged them earlier today to see if the 'volvo' tether they sell comes with a fixing to attach it to the fuel door! 👍

One other thing I remember from that replacement tether was that it never turned on the cap as freely as it probably should have when stopping to fill up .

Maybe a light smear of Vaseline or a rub of fine wet n dry paper on the inner of the tether might help .

Just received a response, it comes without any type of fixing grommet (Volvo must have a different style of attachment). Have now bought a genuine used part as linked in a previous post, £7. Quite alot for the need of a 10p rubber band LOL

Well my replacement cap arrived, am disappointed. It was advertised as a 'diesel' cap so my own fault. It does 'fit', BUT the original petrol one has a clutch mechanism in it so that when tightened on, it just clicks the further you turn it. The diesel one just locks on. Also, as you can see, the petrol one has an intricate matrix of vent holes and spring release, the diesel doesn't, so I'm concerned that pressure may just build up, and my tank explodes LOL

Anyone interested in buying a 'diesel' cap for a Mk2, PM me
