Focus Mk3 1.6 TDCI gearbox issues

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone I'm just looking for some help and advice please regarding a gearbox issue on my 2012 1.6tdci focus which has the 6 speed manual box

I purchased the car last month on 98k miles and it unfortunately has a slight crunch when trying to use 3rd gear. I have changed the gearbox oil but it's made no difference to 3rd gear unfortunately

I have a local gearbox garage who have stated it's the 3rd gear synchro that's probably at fault they have quoted the following

3rd & 4th gear synchro hub replacement along with the gears and bearings/seal set with gearbox oil £425 + Vat plus £200 + Vat on removing and fitting the gearbox so £750 in total

Would you say that's a good quote ?

With the car being on 98k miles woud it be advisable to get the clutch replaced while the gearbox is off ?

Would you recommend the flywheel to also be changed or are they pretty good on these cars ?

What brands of clutch is recommended on these cars ? Sachs or LUK or something else

Any help and advice would be grateful I've never had to have anything like this done before so all advice is welcome thank you in advance

Purchased privately I assume?

Would definitely have the clutch changed while the gearbox is out.  Wouldn't change the DMF unless is was rattling.

Personally, I'd just put up with the 3rd gear crunch.  Can't see it being worth the £750 repair costs.  The cambelt might snap tomorrow and then you've lost a huge chunk of cash...

Thank you for the reply I'm very grateful and yes it was purchased privately Unfortunately

I have had the cambelt and pump changed in the last 3 weeks so I'm hoping that won't happen now

Morning just a quick update I went ahead and had the gearbox repair done last week and also had the 3 piece clutch kit and flywheel replaced at the same time it's a massive improvement and is now nice to drive at last

I do now have 1 issue though that I didn't have previously and that in the morning when it's cold first and second gear are extremely stiff for the first few minutes until it warms up and then it's absolutely fine

I have called the garage who did the repair for advice this morning and they said to take it back in so they can bleed something to see if it helps etc

I was originally thinking it might have been the gearbox oil that they used. I did ask and he stated he used 75 / 80

When I originally changed the gearbox oil last month before the repair was carried out as I was hoping it would help I was advised to use FE 75W from reading all the focus forums which I did and it was absolutely fine no issues and definitely no stiffness like I'm experiencing now when cold

Would it be worth me doing it myself again with FE 75W or is it pointless ?

I'm just trying to save the hassle of travelling and leaving the car again for it not to help if that makes sense

I would agree with you, cold stiffness sounds far more like thick gear oil than air in the clutch line.
