Smoke from under dash

Featured Replies

Mk2 focus smoke coming from under drivers side dash and make a bubbly/squelchy noise what is the problem?

It's probably steam rather than smoke.  If so, the heater matrix is leaking.

Yes it is definitely steam. Is it an easy job to fix or is it expensive at a garage to do?

That really depends where the leak is.  There's a common fault on these with the pipe connection coming apart just above the clutch pedal area.  That can be fixed quite cheaply with a repair kit but not all garages will be aware of that kit.

However, if the matrix itself has split, that's a huge job that requires the whole dash to be removed in order to replace it.  Several hours of garage labour for that.

I've had the heater matrix 'seal' go twice on me, you may find these couple of posts of interest...

I forgot to post this too, which is a proper permanent fix to the fault, which if mine fails a 3rd time, i'll be getting done...

'O' rings look generic, but aren't, they have a specific chamfered edge - get them from ford, there are pictures of them in their packets on above posts so you can get part numbers...

Hi how did you manage to get it done I dont seem to have any room and I can't see what I'm doing untill my head is on the peddles. Is there an easy way to get to it as it's the pipe behind the first one that's gone on my car?

I didn't do the work myself, as I'm fairly incompetent, but on calling back to the garage for something else, did see my car with a mechanic on his back, with head in the pedals, so I'm guessing that's the position LOL

How much did it cost roughly?

Now, I have been using the same garage for over a decade, and, he sold me my Focus, so I'm unsure the cost will equate to anything you might get. I was charged parts, and a couple of hours labour, and living in a rural area, labour is sub £50/hour. I wouldn't touch a Ford dealer for something like that.

I've fixed the leak mine was from both pipes very fiddly job to do and I could only manage to get one hand in there to do it so a ***** nightmare lol. But whilst I was therebdoung it I did notice I have some sort of switch just dangling down and I can't work out where it should go. Don't know if you know of any switches above the clutch peddle area?

Oddly enough, the clutch peddle switch !!

Does your car start with out pressing the clutch peddle down ?

Mk2 Focus doesn't require a clutch pedal press unless it's got optional push-button start.

If you don't have Cruise Control or Push Button start then the switch is not important and is likely broken anyway, the spring inside them breaks and messes with the Electrical contact.

I drove around in my Mk 2.5 for a long time with a broken one and when I did change it the car didn't drive differently. I only changed it because it kept showing up as non functioning when scanning the car.

It just clips in with a 90 degree turn from memory.

That may have something to do with your driving skill level.  It should help rev match between gears when functioning properly.
