MK4 St-Line Estate 1.0 125bhp economy & performance

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

im currently driving a 2020 Active estate 1.5 diesel (120bhp). I’m looking to upgrade and am looking at a new ST-Line estate 1.0 EcoBoost 125bhp.

what is the EcoBoost like MPG wise ? I know it won’t be as economical as the diesel , but what kind of economy can I expect?

also , how would it compare to the diesel in terms of performance ? I don’t want to have problems going up hills or on the motorway when I have the kids and boot full.

Thanks in advance

I have an old brochure and here are the book figures, not real life but it should give you an Idea. They are for the non MHEV petrol cars.

Incidentally the figures for the Estates are a lot poorer than for 5 Door cars and these figures are for Manual Gearbox cars, Automatics are a lot less.

1.0 Petrol 125 bhp - 45-48 mpg

1.5 Diesel 120 bhp - 57-61 mpg

If you go for a Petrol car then I would recommend the 1.5 Petrol. It is a lot faster, has a lot of Torque for a Petrol car and the difference in fuel consumption compared to the 1.0 cars is very small.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, we can’t get the 1.5 petrol in ireland. I’d defo have gone for that if I could have gotten it

We have a 2019 1.0 125bhp Ecoboost used for mainly round town driving. Car averages 35mpg according to fuel computer. On the motorway we get around 6-10mpg more.

Performance wise, on hills you really do have to use the gearbox, the car is a bit underpowered if you want an honest opinion.

Thank You Tomo2001,  that was my hunch to be honest.

I’ve also been looking at a second hand Kuga 1.5 diesel and may opt for that instead even if it’s more exp than a new focus

The 1.5 diesel 120 to 1.0 EcoBoost 125 is definitely NOT an upgrade lol

I would consider getting a performance air filter and a remap if you just need a little more power. The 1.0 EcoBoost is really going to suffer with less torque when weighted down. I feel it even in the 1.5 Ecoboost and it's a mighty good engine imo, but for a lighter car ironically enough.

Is it an MHEV or just the basic 125?  The MHEVs do have a good chunk of torque low down - the basic 125 does not!

It’s a basic non MHEV. I drove it today and am not gonna buy it. I’ll either wait for a 2022 focus diesel with the same engine or else will buy a Kuga diesel.

thanks everyone for the advice , really appreciate it

Just out of curiosity I did some research on what's available for the latest Kuga. I suggest you find a clean used 2.0 EcoBlue 190 (diesel) ST-Line X (or X Edition) and ignore the 2.5 Ecoboost PHEV. Ford will likely try to persuade you into this model, but the non-fancy 2.0 diesel is a much stronger and better performing engine, with regular gearbox and better brakes. The money you save not going for a PHEV should be put into heated steering and a HUD - which are far more beneficial to have.

Disclaimer that I believe all PHEVs are terrible life choices, especially mixed with Ford electronics.

In reality, you'll be lucky to get 42MPG from the Ecoboost

This including on the motorway? My old Mk3.5 TitX 1.0 (125) with the 6 speed slush box usually offered me 42-45mpg on the motorway with cruise on 70mph.

Currently in a Kona EV but looking to buy a Mk4.5 Focus Estate over the coming weeks so it'll likely be the mHEV 1.0 125 with the 7-speed auto.
