SYNC 3 Maps Update question about Stop Start

Featured Replies

I hoping to update the maps in the next few weeks. I have a 90 minute journey planned for the update, but understand it could take up to two hours to complete.

If the update is still in progress and stop start kicks in, will the update still continue?. (I ask this as the Ford website says the engine must be running during the update)

Thanks

Doesn't matter if stop start kicks in. As long as ignition is still on (which it will be unless you press the power button).

Basically Sync just needs to stay on/running.

Probably little chance of stop  start working anyway, mine hasn't worked for over 6 months.

Apologies for the long post but I wanted to add my thoughts ..

I've been attempting to update the maps since purchasing my Fiesta in Nov 2022 (Ford Fiesta EcoBoost 1.0). My observation would be that unlike the rest of the technology in my vehicle, the process for updating the maps is best described as 'clunky' - at worst, not working as designed.

I've managed to update the 'sync' software and am on V3.4.22200 - wish I could say the same for the maps. I began by downloading the map updates and ended up with a 22Gb file. I duly unzipped it onto a usb stick as instructed and made sure the files/folders on the usb were correct (one folder called syncmyride containing the updates +  autoinstall.lst and dontindx.msa files). This was left plugged in for a number of journeys (posts on these forums suggested it would continue map updates if they didn't finish the first time). I had a 'lst' error which seemed to be caused by the autoinstall.lst file not matching the update files - but I checked and it WAS correct. I also had errors suggesting the downloaded files were invalid - I downloaded them a second time and tried again, with the same results. I checked the FORD website and it suggested that map updates could be done via wifi. This was news to me so I tried this and definitely saw a downloaded file with the same name format as the ones on the usb stick being downloaded over wifi and then installed. However, there was no 'installation complete' message displayed despite the system telling me there were no further updates. And I don't have any log file to upload to the Ford website.

I suspect the map updates have in fact been successfully installed - because a road junction that was being incorrectly displayed as a roundabout (junction of A38 and A4104 near Upton-Upon-Severn) which alerted me to the fact the maps were out of date, is now being correctly shown as a dual-carriageway (A38) with priority at a t-junction over the A4104. However, the Ford website hasn't been updated and  still thinks there are maps updates to be applied. When I tried downloading them again as an experiment, a 22Gb update started. I cancelled this download as I suspect it will be exactly the same files as before.

I haven't yet contacted my dealer as I didn't imagine this update saga would still be dragging on weeks later. I would hope they might assist and help out free of charge. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they would 'help' for a fee!

Just putting the kettle on - back soon to finish reading it 🤣

Ok kettle boiled now and I've finished reading 👍

If you have completed the map update OTA then there will be no need to upload a log file back to Ford, the car will have already done that when the installation was successful.

What version of maps does it show now 'F10' or 'F11' ?

The Ford site often takes weeks to update and very often is still showing downloads that you already have, it's just the way it is I'm afraid.

Hi unofix - thanks for your patience reading my post - and hope you enjoyed your tea or coffee whilst doing so.

I've just parked the car close to the house and checked the maps - they are showing as version F11. I thought the Ford website might take days rather than weeks to be updated. But if it does take weeks, so be it. But I'll probably contact support and irritate them like a small child would by constantly bothering to ask why (Why??? .. )

Whilst I was checking the map version, the sync system found yet another update it decided it needed to download (yesterday it suggested it was all up to date). I've locked the car and left it doing so as I think it carries on downloading, even if the car is turned off.

Thankfully my phone links to sync without any problems and displays on the built-in display. So my backup plan is always that I can use the 'Waze' app for navigation.

Sounds like you are up to date. Maybe just some minor files that are still updating but the latest maps are F11.

The whole Sync update system is painful and is the source of many complaints. I'd not be too concerned about what state the Ford servers think your car is at for just now. Updates happen so infrequently that it will most likely be a few months before anything changes.

** It was coffee !! 😀 **

Thanks unofix. I think my fiesta's maps hadn't been updated since new (2020). I'm probably the first owner who has bothered trying.

I'm still going contact Ford support because a huge company like them shouldn't be saddling owners with a system like this. It should keep records of the software version information updated on a more regular basis than every few months. I used to work in IT Support and I'd be embarrassed if I was responsible for this one!

I wish you luck. Many have tried and all but a tiny few have failed 🙁

The 'Guy' that Ford had that seemed to know how Sync updates work actually left Ford towards the end of last year. In an e-mail to one of the members here Ford CRC actually said that they didn't have anyone able to look at concerns at the moment 🤣

Speculation is the 'Guy' took his mouse and keyboard with him and they hadn't been able to get to the shops to buy some new ones 🤣🤣

It's quite a sad state of affairs but normal for many companies these days.

The problem is different systems on the car doing conflicting things. In an ideal world the APIM would stay awake and download over Wifi while the car is locked say overnight. But that's a great way to flatten the battery so the BCM and BMS will idenitfy there is too much power draw and tell the APIM to shut off, which gives it a very small window to actually download anything. That's why I always use USB.

Thanks for your responses unofix & alexp999 ..

alexp999 - I thought I'd read somewhere that the wifi updates could happen while the car is switched off. But I can see that might drain the battery so unless I'm sat in the car for 15-20 mins with the engine running, think I might stick to usb updates instead. Assuming they work! 😉

unofix - I can well imagine the 'guy' taking his knowledge with him when they dispensed with his services and the company then realising they needed him after all. With things like this, I'm like a little terrier who won't let go of something. Years of working in IT support have taught me to be patient and use the 'broken record' technique ie. keep asking the same question over and over when the answer you get isn't what you actually asked. So I'm quite happy to have a long conversation with Ford's customer services and/or IT support to get this looked at. Doesn't sound like I'll be successful given past experiences - but I do enjoy a good challenge! 🙂

Good luck with that.

Wait till something serious goes wrong, they won't care about that either

Just to add to the sync update saga. Over the past month I have tried updating my system numerous times, using different USB sticks, to update to 3.4.22200 in an effort to get the Ford update site to accept my log file. May I add everytime the car says update was successful. Everttime I try and upload the log file from the different USB sticks it comes up "Upload failed please try again."  Checked for update via Wi-Fi in the car it says "System up to date". Version in car showing 3.4.22200 and maps F11 which is, I believe, is fully up to date. Ford update website still showing "Update available" which is obvious as it will not accept my log file. It doesn't look like the Wi-Fi from the car is updating the website either. Any suggestions apart from taking it to the dealer which I doubt will achieve anything?

DaveT70 - I've had a reply to my email asking to raise an incident with Ford and a case manager has been assigned and has created an incident number. I've supplied the information they have requested. Too early to tell if this will come to anything - but it's a start.

jsk - sounds similar to my experiences. I am on the same 'Sync' software versions as you (Sync - 3.4 22200  + Sync Maps - F11). I can't suggest anything at present and am resisting the urge to contact the dealer as I'd expect they would want to charge me for their time and as this is a software issue, it doesn't feel to me like anything they would need to be involved with.

LostNTransit - my backup plan, should all else fail, is to plug in my Samsung phone (which displays on the built-in display) and use the 'Waze' app. I find 'Waze' very intuitive and as road conditions get updated by other Waze users in real-time, the traffic information is usually bang up-to-date.

I've heard back from Ford and have supplied the requested info (screenshots showing my V5C and the current software levels). And I wait ....

Please let us know how it goes Melvyn. On my last Fiesta I had software problems which was finally sorted via ford support. You might even get lucky and get given a free servicing like I did.

Follow Up:

We've heard about waze, but have been using Offline maps and Navigation app from Goolgeplay. It's worked flawlessly since 2004 for us. If you're new to that app, the longer you use it the more it knows your driving habits and selected the best route based on how you drive. Its a self learning app which auto adjusts to how we travel.

Don't know if it's the same thing or not but when I couldn't load Waze one day, I used Google Maps instead and that worked really well with very clear instructions ..

Somewhere along the way, I've managed to lose the log file created when you update maps via a usb. Ford's customer (cough) 'service' team's initial response was to tell me without the log file from my previous update they couldn't help and couldn't contact the 'technical' team without it. They suggested if I don't have a log file to contact my dealer - I did so and predictably, they couldn't help and suggested contacting Ford UK direct.

I pointed out to the customer services agent she'd completely ignored (a) the screenshots I supplied showing the system updating via wifi (b) the fact wifi updates don't appear to create any log file (c) the screenshot showing 'system is up to date' (d) the immediately following screenshot showing a 'last updated' date of two weeks ago.  I also pointed out that the Ford website still shows map updates are needed despite the wifi updates claiming everything is up-to-date.

I suggested the customer services agent contact the technical team to ask them to explain to me what the status of my maps updates are and made it extremely clear I was fed up of going round in circles. And that as an ex IT support specialist with many year's experience, I'd be perfectly capable of talking 'technical' with their people to understand where things are at the moment. And that is she couldn't help me, perhaps she would forward my emails on to someone who CAN help.

Surprise, surprise, that seems to have helped move things on and she's said she'll contact someone in the technical team and report back. I'm not holding my breath ..

May be the BBC could make this in to a new series ? 🤣

Hi Melvyn. I still have got a copy of my Log file. I am on holiday next week but When I get back I will have a go with Ford support and see what they can do with mine if they need the Log file to sort it out. Don't hold much hope though.

See this link (others are available) and you can recreate your missing log file.

https://www.kugaownersclub.co.uk/threads/how-to-create-a-sync3-log-file-needed-to-update-ford-servers.22289/

Sorry I have just been and done that and it still comes up "Update failed". I still think it is a fault in my Sync system downloading a corrupt Log file. The "Update failed" refers to the Log file update to Ford the actual update to 3.4.22200 was successful.

Out of interest if I actually open the log file I get the following.

That looks pretty normal, it's an XML with lots of info about your APIM, it's not supposed to be human readable.
