Intermittent non starting

Hi. Our 1.4 tdci Fusion will at times turn over but not start. We then have to push start. Then there won't be a problem for either 2 months or it will do the same again the next time. What could be wrong? Of course Murphy is around d when you take it to a mechanic and then it wont have a problem. Very frustrating. Please help

    Mine is the same, but horrific on low weather temps.

    I really should replace the heater plugs.

    I noticed on mine that i can smell unburnt fuel from exhaust when it will not start.

    Once weather temp increases it will start eventually
