Focus1.6tdci 2010 109 Tuning box

Featured Replies

Are these any good? Mine has OK power but could use a little more. It has done 188k so a little concerned about blowing it up lol. Anyone got one of these fitted? 😊

You have a 13 year old 1.6 diesel that's fast approaching 200,000 miles and you think it's a good idea to try and force a bit more power out of it ???????

I'd be happy to leave well alone and consider it good fortune that the engine is running as well as it is. 👍

Agree'd, there's no way I'd be modifying it on that mileage.  Even if the engine is fine, you'll be replacing the clutch and probably the DMF & gearbox within a matter of weeks.  EGR, DPF and turbo are probably reaching the end of their life if not already replaced once as well.

I'd also advise against tuning boxes in general, but admittedly that's based on experience from 10 years ago, some are a bit more technical than the standard resistor in a box that they used to be.  I've always gone for remaps myself.  But they were cheap and easy on cars around 2000, the 1.6 TDCI ECU is a pain to map via OBD and requires a large map file which takes more time and costs more to adapt than the earlier ones.

My thoughts exactly. Leave well alone and I shall continue to regularly service it. Thanks

Tuning boxes, contrary to belief, do not give any more BHP or torque than maximum.

They do, however give more BHP and torque lower down the rev range, but still not over maximum.

All they do is trick the PCM into giving higher fuel rail pressure for your throttle input, so the fuel rail is on constant full pressure, but never over maximum pressure.

Once you get to about 3,500 RPM the car reverts back to standard as that's the point you'd want maximum fuel pressure anyway.

They certainly help with throttle response and lower end torque and pick up

If you want one, they are all the same, just posher boxes and higher prices, so I would go for a DieselExpress, they are about £65. I had one on my 1.5 TDCi MK3.5 and it improved response and I was getting an average of 59MPG vs 52MPG without the box

Thanks for that. I would certainly consider one if mine was of a lesser mileage.
