Considering of buying MK4 1.5 ECO

Hello guys,

So for a while I've been looking for a new car. I realy like how the new ford focus gen looks like. I came across ST Line 2019, 1.5 ECO with 150hp. Now that I look throughout forums, reliability of engines are not on the best reputation. However, since I am in europe, I get the 3 cylinder engine that seems to be better than 4 cyl. But I still lack info when it comes to higher milage examples. The one I am looking at is now at 60k miles. My question is, what is your experience or knowledge on these 3 cyl engines? Is it true that they are more reliable? Should I avoid this purchase? Thanks for your help!

The 1.5 3 cylinder isn’t related to the 1.0.

It’s used in the Fiesta ST I’ve not read many issues. I’d chose it over the MHEV any day.

That's what I've been hearing.. but no solid info tho, just people identifying that 1.5 3-cyl is a good engine, compared to 4-cyl.. Really want it but not sure if it will be considerably trouble-free if I maintain it correctly.

I had one for a few days.  Engine was nice enough but the car was in poor condition so ended up returning.

If you're set on a Mk4 petrol, 1.5 EB is the engine I'd choose.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I am looking only for 1.5 EB, but it seems that there are a lot of negativity around it, or is it specifically 4 cyl?

It’s the 4 cylinder mostly. I haven’t read anything in particular about the 3 pot.

Isn't it the 4-cylinder 1.5 that's the open-deck design that's reputed to have head gasket problems?

I read a lot of problems with this engine, 1.0 as well. Wet belt, head gasket problems, oil leaks, turbo problems and dead engines overall..

But when I was reading about 1.5, I did not know yet, that european models went ahead with 3-cyl so it confused the heck out of me, as I was all hands down, but when I look for 3-cyl version, I cannot see any real feedback.. I am in between of choosing mazda 3/cx-3 or focus st-line and honestly, I really want focus, but skyactiv engines are hard to beat..

I have the 1.5 3-Cyl in 182ps guise, been fine for 20k miles.

I haven't heard of any problems with them either and have not had any problems with my one.

They have a Chain instead of a Wet Belt but the oil Pump on all but the very early ones is a small Wet Belt.

The UK models have a GPF but I have not heard of any problems with it, unlike the 1.0 Engines with a GPF. A run down the Motorway every now and again brings the Implied Soot Load back to 0.

They also have Cylinder Deactivation, something that gave some of the 1.0 Engines problems with vibrations although I have not heard of any of these problems with the 1.5 to any great extent and I have never experienced it myself.

I own a 1.5 Eco boost 150hp, no problems at the moment, I though at 1 litre for a car of this size was too small and would put more stain on the engine, I wanted an engine bigger than my motor bike I had.

. Wet belt,

Bear in mind that the Mk 4 Focus has never used the wet belt 1.0 engine. Chain cam drive, similar to the 1.5 triple.  oil pump drive is wet belt but we don't seem to see issues there.

We have a couple of 1.5 eco blue's in the family fitted in Fiestas & have never been an issue one has 86k and the other 66k miles, oil & filter change every 6 months & they'll run forever, at work we've several closely related 1.5 high milers fitted in Berlingo & Dispatch vans that have very few issues, apart from the sumps that keep getting knocked off on building sites, if they're kept serviced they last, ignore the long service intervals is the key.

I have two, a MK4 1.5 EcoBoost 3 cyl (32k miles) and also a MK3.5 1.5 EcoBoost 4 cyl (62k miles).

Obviously both very different cars and different engines, but other than tyres and servicing, zero issues or cost with either.

The MK3.5 is 10 years old early next year so a new timing belt and water pump will be the first expense in 9 years, no complaints from me.

It's not something you have to wait for. Get it done in the next couple of months, it's much cheaper than a new engine.
