Ford focus MK2 facelift ST key and mileage issues

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am having a nightmare with my ST the key fob will not unlock or lock the car I have to use the key in the door. To start the car I need to press the fob up to the steering column to let me use the push start. Once I set off it knocks the mileage out and doesn't record any mileage. I've had new keys, auto electrician, key programmer to look at it and I am still no closer.

Attached is codes I am getting I know I need a abs sensor replacement.

The car is stolen recovered two years ago if this helps

Mny thanks

Dry solder issue in the instrument cluster?

Try whacking the dash above the cluster and see if it reacts. Causes various errors in  multiple modules due to lack of communication along one or both can bus networks. About £100 to have it professionally resoldered.

While I would never rule out the possibility of the dry solder joints issue on a 2008 Focus, I suspect that this case is a little difference.

The clue being that it was "Stolen Recovered" which means that the PATS system must have been defeated by some method. This has probably involved damage to the RFA and the RCR which is what FORScan is indicating. The wiring needs to be checked and it is possible that the remote control receiver needs to be replaced.

There are other DTC's showing loss of communication with the EPS which is also part of the PATS system. This could be a case of Canbus wires have been disconnected at a strategic point which allowed the vehicle to be stolen. I don't think that this is a normal failure, rather that it is a condition that has been deliberately caused.

I assumed the car has been behaving itself for the last two years since the theft. A whack on the dash may save a lot hassle and if not , nothing lost.

The instrument cluster can be ruled out as the cause of the problem.

On a keyless start Focus MK2/MK2.5 the PATS immobilizer functionality is controlled by the KVM (Keyless Vehicle module). The PATS functionality of the instrument cluster is disabled in the configuration.

A keyless start Focus MK2/MK2.5 will even start and run without the instrument cluster connected.

That is a very neat bit of information... 👍

Is the car keyless (passive) entry AND keyless start?

By keyless entry I don't mean remote entry

That’s interesting to know. My son’s 2008 ST MK2.5 went into limp home mode many times and threw up power steering failure messages etc when the can bus failed in the IC. ‘U1900’ dtc would be expected to be recorded although other issues can trigger this. A whack on the dash can help diagnose in some instances.

So whats your thoughts on the situation @Gman91 ?

Has this problem existed since the vehicle was stolen and recovered, or has it just happened in the last week ?

Hi all,

Thanks for the reply's. I am gonna work through them the car was fine until the battery died that's when it all started.

It is  just keyless start not keyless entry as well.

It runs fine no limp mode or anything when started just the mileage is knocked off

Hi all,

Had a lot of work done in it so far to get it through a MOT esp sensor changed and CV boots and joint etc. However I still have the issue with my mileage dishing out engine light, esp and abs light is on. I've just bought some new clocks and got them installed and programmed still no joy.

The garage I sent it to had 2 auto electricians and 2 key specialist look at it and no joy they have no idea. It's got no keys registered on the system but won't allow any key to be registered. My current key fob still works when I place it next the ignition barrel but that's is it.

It doesn't go into limp mode or throw any other message up. This was a stolen recovered car but the key and systems worked perfect until the car battery died.

Pulling my hair out with this any help would be really appreciated

Gareth.

when the battery was changed did the car get programmed to say there was a new battery fitted, I've come across this before with bmw's and this sort of thing normally happens when the battery is changed without telling the ecu.

Hi birdy,

I don't believe so is that something forscan can do?

I think the guy who bought it before me changed the barrel on the door as the key in the fob does not work manually I had to have a separate manual key cut for that

It's a 2008 car, it won't have a BMS (battery monitor system) fitted, so the car isn't smart enough to need to be told it has a new battery...

When you say you’ve just got some new clocks and had them programmed, do you mean the whole cluster was replaced with new (about £1000 or so ) or replaced with a second hand ‘cloned one’?
