Water ingress

Featured Replies

Afternoon all, had some damn heavy rain here last few days, The boot is dry, but strangely the tailgate is holding water and if lifted fully will run out the top interior trim into the boot and over the rear seats. Are there not supposed to be drain holes ? Is it supposed to be sealed ?. If i lift it to 90 degrees first it runs out into the channel and runs down and away. Can i drill a couple og holes in the bottom so it drains ??

Thanks

It's meant to be sealed.  Drilling holes in the bottom won't do any harm.  But water running through there is likely to wreck the boot handle, plate lights, latch, wiper motor etc.  I'd rather try to get it sealed up from the top again myself.

When I bought my 2008 Focus, I had problems with water into the boot space when I lifted the hatch. I noticed that later models had a moulding down each side of the hatch glass.

I don't know if they will help your problem, but I think I'd have the hatch trim panel off, and have a look and see if you can find where the water is getting in.

I had a 1998 Mondeo hatch, and twice in five years the driver's footwell filled up with water, just twice !

cheers for that Paul, i fitted a FL tail and it has the plastic trims. The water is in the actual tailgate, not the boot space. Had a good look today and its possibly the grab bar. I put gaffa tape over the holes before i fitted it as i had to rewire the boot release and lights. Will hit the poundshop tomorrow and grab a tube of clear silicone and go nuts. The exploded diag show what appears to be a seal 47775 which wasnt on mine. will see if i can lay my hands on one.

I’ve got the 47775 gasket fitted to my car (plus seem to have a spare one also), it’s not really a water seal it’s more for stopping the top and side edges of the finisher from rubbing the paint of the tailgate. Think there were issues historically with the chrome finishers on some models rubbing paint away and causing rust.

More likely you’ll need to seal the 4 or 6 holes where the finisher bolts through the tailgate - these originally had seals on the back of the finisher but only thin foam and possibly disappeared now.
