Is it ok to just change the oil and not filter…

Featured Replies

On an in between oil change? I changed the oil and filter in November on my mk2 tdci but wanted to treat it to some new oil soon but the filter is a bit fiddly. Is it ok to just change the oil and keep the current filter?

Well of course it's always better to change both, but changing just the oil has got to better than doing nothing. Personally I'd replace the filter every 12,000 miles so it more depends on how many miles you are doing.

Yeah well i changed oil and filter only about 5k or less miles ago as only November. I’d do the filter and oil again in around this November but just thought as I’m on 100k now I’d treat it to new oil now as it’s quick and easy if I don’t need to faff with the filter too. Just wondered if was worth doing if keeping old filter

just change them both every November

Seems like a waste of oil tbh.  Wouldn't bother with the intermediate change personally.  With average yearly mileage I'd just do oil & filter every 12 months.

I thought the 1.6 tdci needed oil changed every 6k or so as they are weak engines or is that just a rumour?

Because of the way that the DPF Regenerates on these cars, the Oil can get very contaminated with Raw Fuel so I would agree that you are doing the right thing.

I'm sure that on at least one of the Diesel Mk4's, Ford specify an Oil only change at one year as well as the normal two yearly Service Intervals where the Filter is changed as well, so doing an intermediate Oil only change is not an unusual Idea.

it only takes an extra 5 minutes to whack on a new oil filter

They're not weak engines.

They did suffer from carbon deposits which can block the turbo oil feed...but it's been literally years since I've seen a blown 1.6 TDCI turbo.  Compare that to the EcoBoost issues that we see on here several times a week...

Part of the problem was the old Eolys additive type DPF.  It never was effective, and meant lots of failed regens, plus lots of time with a hot DPF cooking the turbo oil feed located behind it.

On the 2010 model, it has a cDPF which is much more efficient, and the turbo oil feed was re-routed away from the DPF can.

The sump design is also poor, meaning you don't get all the old oil out.  Any left behind contaminates the fresh oil.

I owned one for 3.5 years, kept to 12 months servicing and never had any turbo issues.  It's up to you to decide whether to continue with the extra changes or not.  But if changing the oil then I would suggest taking the extra time to change the filter as well.  The new oil will be immediately contaminated even more than normal if not.

greetings,Jason87.

First , I'm no qualified mechanic ...

A good inspection of the filter , visual and if possible touch , should give you and idea of the condition of the filter. If okeish , rinse out with petrol , allow to dry properly . The age of the filter also plays a part when trying to reuse one . And how bad the oil is ...

The experience I have  with cars are from the Triumph Herald and spitfire days ... abd music cassettes ... ✌🏻 .

Ideally, change both .

Again , I'm no pro mech.

Good luck .

For the low cost of a new filter it's worth replacing.

Why put in new oil and then pass it through a dirty filter?

Taking off the filter allows for a more thorough drain down of the old oil anyway.

If your only doing 5k a year in a diesel and the majority of these trips are short and the engine is not getting up to temperature then I strongly suggest to replace both the oil and filters every 6 months.
