1.6 TDCI DPF fuel additive reset - tank flap method

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any tips for getting the tank flap method for resetting the DPF control module after an additive top up (described here and elsewhere) to work?

I know the process has to be followed exactly but I've tried it several times and am sure I'm following those instructions correctly.

Problem is that no MIL/PCL lights come up at the end to confirm reset.

I am also not sure what the MIL/PCL lights actually look like - are these the Engine Check light ('crankcase') and Emissions Fault light ('gearwheel')?

The additive tank took only 0.5 litres after 35000 miles since last refill by dealer at 100000 miles (invoiced for 4 litres), which doesn't seem a lot - yet emissions at MOTs in this period have been perfect (zero).

Vehicle is Focus MkII Dec 2005 1.6 TDCI. 'No Codes' on my simple DTC reader.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

I've only ever reset it using ELMConfig myself.  You can also see the level using ELMConfig so know when it's been reset.

The Eolys tank on the Focus holds less than 2 litres.  If you were invoiced for 4 litres, they must have spilt a lot on the floor...

Half a litre after 35k is acceptable.  It depends on the way you refuel - if you always empty the tank and then brim it, that uses less Eolys than people that dribble £5 worth of diesel in every week.

Thanks, Tom, that's helpful. I seldom refuel less than a full tank from empty, so it's good to hear that 0.5 litre is feasible.

I had read somewhere that 1 litre additive per 25000 miles was normal but when I saw the size of the tank I knew why I was doing the latest top-up myself!

I'm wondering if reset isn't possible if the additive tank was 3/4 full before top up?
