Electrical issue!

Featured Replies

Hi all!

im having an issue and I hope someone can help me!

getting all the symptoms of the dry solder on cluster, had it repaired still the same.

Replaced with a good set of clocks, still the same!

it’s intermittent, shows handbrake on, looses temp readings and gives reduced acceleration and engine malfunction messages, nothing shows on code reader but on forscan I get a million codes. Thinking maybe dash loom? Don’t want to start ripping it all apart really so if someone has any tips I could try please let me know! Thanks

The other common thing to check for besides IC solder issue is corrosion from water ingress at the GEM/BCM, aka the passenger footwell fusebox. I'd have a look at that next.

Great, will check this after work today mate thank you!

The replacement cluster could have the same issue, you can't tell.

It is always recommended to repair the original cluster.

I would get the new cluster checked for solder issues

When you replaced the clocks, I assume you had to recode all the items that need recoding ( pats etc). Otherwise it won’t work. If it was a set of cloned clocks, someone as some advertise, then it should be ok.

Did you do the shock/connector wiggle on either cluster?

The problem is almost certainly one of two things. Either a faulty instrument cluster, or a faulty GEM/BCM unit.

Did you replace the instrument cluster yourself or did someone do it for you ?

I ask because changing the IC for a secondhand unit comes with it's own complications such as having to reprogramme the PATS system, possibly having to reprogramme the keyfobs, and of course setting the correct mileage.

Water ingress to the GEM module is quite a common problem on your model and is not an easy fix. Before investigating remember to disconnect the battery. Remove the connectors from the GEM and look for signs of water and/or greenish corrosion of the connector pins.

Hi mate,

I swapped the cluster myself, coded using elmconfig and forscan etc, all done properly and car drives fine, just these same issues keep coming back unfortunately

Yes mate all coded properly, I did wiggle the wiring and connector but didn’t change the faults/outcome

The replacement cluster had no issues on removal, and has been in my car previously, I took it out for one with different screen colour etc, but put it back in and coded again to try and resolve this issue, I had the solder checked by local auto electrician before refitting

Then it would seem fair to rule out the instrument cluster. That leaves the GEM as just about the only other thing that could cause all of the faults that you have.

Hi mate, just took the fuse board out, all connections seem spot on, no green pins or signs or water ingress, plugged everything back in and still the same 🫣🫣
