Focus ST3 engine sound at idle/ exhaust blowing a bit

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm new here and recently bought a 2013 ST3, 49k on the clock... I've trawled through the forums and YouTube looking at common faults/ quirks/ annoyances, but nothing sounds like mine does.

This sound is in addition to not a rough idle, I'd call it more of a slightly unstable idle. There is no movement of the rev counter at idle, just an ever so slight shudder every few seconds along with a sound that I can only describe as the exhaust blowing/ stuttering a bit.

Regarding the sound that is most noticeable on the video of the wheel/ drivers side, does it sound familiar to anyone? Sounds to me like some kind of metal wheel spinning not quite as smoothly as it should.

Hopefully these links work...

I was thinking about changing all of the spark plugs in the hope of resolving it but, perhaps it hasn't got anything to do with them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jason, yes there sounds to be an "odd" noise in the background but cant make a decision on what it might be

The main "noise" it is caused by the design - it is the injectors due to their "direct injection" - they sound like noisy tappets or, as we say on the ST Forum - these engines sound like a bag of spanners at idle

Thanks for your response Trevor. I’ve done some more digging and I’m going to start with having the throttle body cleaned and replacing all of the spark plugs, if that doesn’t resolve it I’ll start looking elsewhere. The clicking/ metallic spinning noise seems to be common as I found a few videos on YouTube where it sounds very similar if not the same.

Jason, I know it's difficult just listening to video's but in that video you posted just sounds to me like the injectors, nothing else.

I doubt replacing the spark plus will sort out your query

I can highly recommend joining this forum if you have an ST. I had 4 brand new ST's and sold my last one in 2011 and I still pay my yearly membership of £10, many members say best £10 they have ever spent, really good stuff and quite a busy site

Hi all, I got some better footage/ sound of the exhaust.

Any idea what could be causing it? Spark plugs have been replaced (as they were cheap (OEM) and the car was going to the mechanic anyway).

Thanks in advance :)
