Sync 2 navigation is it any good?

Featured Replies

Finally said goodbye to my 1.6 2013 Focus that has been bulletproof and i'm looking at another Focus probably a 2015/2016 with the sync 2 navigation and was wondering if its any good? the thought of built in navigation seems better to me but i know most built in nav systems are disliked and google maps etc are chosen over it, i understand you can buy map updates from Ebay for like £20 to keep it updated but in general how good is the sync 2 navigation? is it decent enough to use to get you from point A to B without ending up in a field? i see a lot of people across all makes now using google maps on their phones over build in navs but just wanted to see how good the built in nav will be.

If you can push to a late 2016 onwards you'll get Sync 3 with Carplay and Android Auto, which lets you cast a compatible phone to the screen. It's much better than Sync 2.

Sync 3 has a PCAP display (like your phone), Sync 2 is resistive touch. It's squishy, slow and doesn't always register when you expect it to.

Sync 2 is fine as a sat nav once programmed in, but given the choice Sync 3 is much better  if only for the carplay/auto capability.

Not all 2016 models are Sync 2.  Mine was registered half way through 2016 (June) and its Sync 2.

I have used the navigation on lots of journeys and never had a problem with it.

My wife has a 2018 Fiesta which has Sync 3.  I prefer Sync 3 navigation over 2.  The address input is easier/simpler.  It looks nicer.  Other than that they probably perform the same when setup.

We have tried Google maps with Sync 3.  It worked OK but has to be connected via a USB cable.  After trying it out, we never bothered to use it again and just stick with the built in Sync 3 navigation.

Depending on which engine you're after, April 2017 onwards means a huge road tax cost jump for most.  So there's a fairly narrow window in 2016/17 where you can get Sync 3 and cheap tax.

Okay i will keep that in mind and try going for a 2016 plate and it will probably be the 1.6 petrol engine as thats what my 2013 had in its been very reliable.

Is the 1.5 petrol engine reliable? also might be a silly question but how do i know if the car i'm looking at is sync 2 or 3?

Ah, the 1.6 Ti-VCT costs the same £180 before and after the tax change.  (Or £200 if automatic pre-17).  They always were very expensive to tax.

The 1.5 EcoBoost in those is a 4 cylinder, not to be confused with the 3 cylinder in the Mk4 Focus or Fiesta ST.  It's not as reliable as the 3 cylinder.

Sync 2 & 3 have a different user interface.  Sync 2 is black background with 4 sections.  Sync 3 is more integrated with a light blue background.

Yeah my 1.6 has been super reliable and a few others i know with the same engine haven't had a single issue either, so the 1.5 petrol engine is a ecoboost? think i will dodge that engine then lol and stick with the 1.6, thanks.
