Dashcam Fuse tap

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm a lil new here, so sorry if this is the wrong place.

I've got a 2019 Focus Titanium X, which I've owned for a year now. I've finally got round to hardwiring my dashcam. I've got a suitable ground and all wires have been fed through. However, I am struggling to get the fuse tap in to the fuse I want to use. I have a nextbase 522Gw front and rear and I bought a hardwire kit with it. The kit comes with a range of right angle fuse taps, but it wont fit in the fuse slot I want to use, (see pic below) because the right angle part gets in the way.

I've seen some fuses with breakout wires attached. Like the one below:

I'm looking for a 10 amp micro fuse with a breakout wire attached (similar to the one above). I am struggling to find any anywhere (I've searched ebay and amazon.... and halfords) anyone got any ideas/got a link to one I can buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have mine in fuse 3 with a normal right angle tap. Or do you want permanent live?

You could of course just turn the fuse tap around and have it facing the other way. Yes it will mean that the dashcam will be drawing it's current through its own fuse (normally 3A) and also the existing 10A but given that the  nextbase 522Gw uses just over one Amp in normal use that won't create any problems.

Or you could do as Alex (and myself) have done and use fuse 3 which is live only with the ignition on.

Just to add to what unofix has said here's a sketch showing how the power is routed through a typical fuse tap. As you can see if the tap is the wrong way round the current for the cam goes through both fuses. In practice I don't think the cam current would be enough to blow the original fuse. I hope this adds some clarity.

Thank you guys for the suggestion of Fuse 3. It does just make more sense to use that one!

I will get it wired up over the weekend. Thanks again!
