Ford Focus 3 2011 - Gearbox noise / whine

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My gearbox seems to be making noise. The garage has said that I need to change the whole gearbox, that it would be more cost effective.

The car has 240000km (so 150000miles).

The gears change fine so it seems like a shame to change the whole gearbox!

The noise sounds like a whine, a bit like a washing machine starting a spin cycle.

When the garage spun the wheels off the ground it sounded more like a rumble from the exterior. Unfortunately I didn't record that.

I have made 2 videos, one spinning a wheel by hand. The other driving and kicking the clutch in and out.

When the gears aren't engaged the noise seems to disappear.

The garage has changed the gearbox oil seal on the left driveshaft twice now in the past year, I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

Does anyone have a better idea than changing the whole gearbox ? Any potential things to try first ?

Thanks
