Mk 2.5 1.8 Petrol Zetec potential diff issue

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have searched for this but can't get a similar answer.

I have a 2010 Mk 2.5 1.8 Petrol Zetec which just passed 80k miles yesterday.

I think I might have a problem with the front diff where two wheels are doing a different speed.

I first noticed it when I would go over a speed bump with one wheel on the flat and the other elevated, it's a mechanical noise. I also get it, but less severely when I have the car on full lock and accelerate. I heard it yesterday when accelerating through a roundabout.

Does anyone have any idea about such noises, am I right in suspecting the diff and, if I am right, what sort of a job is it to fix? It's a 13 year old car, could it lead to a terminal issue?

Thanks in advance.

Far more likely to be a suspension issue. Lots of moving parts that break and just wear out. Coil springs, shock absorbers, track rod ends, CV joints, or even just the rubber bushes on things like the anti-roll bar.

A problem with the differential would be the very last thing on my list to check.

Interesting, thanks. I did have the CV joint issue about 14 months ago, failed the MOT on the gaiter having perished, and the CV joint had been clunking, so I got the joint and gaiter replaced together.

I do feel that this is an issue when the two wheels are turning at different speeds, which is what is leading me to thinking it is the differential.

It's difficult to replicate.

It is a wonderful car otherwise.
