Ford Fiesta Ecoboost won't start

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I just bought a 2013 Ford Fiesta Titanium with 88,000 on the clock.  I bought it via auction and it came without keys.

I had new keys made and although the cars electronics now turn on, the car won't start. I have added petrol to the car and put a new battery.

I checked for diagnostic codes with my OBD and the code P0302 comes up as the fault.

Heres a video of it trying to start up https://streamable.com/sfnw9n

Any ideas?

P0302 is cylinder 2 missfire, check connections, check plugs for spark

Are the cams turning? You should be able to see through the oil fill port while the starter is running.

10 years old 1.0 ecoboost. I wonder if the wet cam belt is still intact.

That were my thoughts. Belt broke and sent to auction with keys lost so no one can try starting it.

Never thought of that

I did think that initially as I saw others on this forum suffering from wet cam belt breaking but thankfully the cam is turning, I checked as you mentioned through the oil fill port.

I have ordered a spark plug socket so I can take them out tomorrow hopefully and check.

The auction was a more a repossesion/seized vehicle auction so I just think the car has been sitting for a while as the MOT ran out 6 months ago.

It did have low coolant and I filled it up yesterday and checked today and it looks empty. I can't see any leak below the car.

Doesn't sound like it's even attempting to start.  If you've got a compression tester, would be well worth using that while the plugs are out.

That is probably why the previous owner offloaded the thing.Perhaps he knew of the problems & did not want the grief with expense on the thing.

Quite a big red flag....!

I would think being 10 years old a cambelt change is an absolute necessity if it can be turned into a runner. If its a repossession then its highly likely it hasn't been looked after and serviced regularly unfortunately....

Changed the spark plugs, still the same.

I borrowed a better OBD tool from a friend and it came up with the codes:

P086B:38-2F Neutral Position Sensor A circuit Range/Performance Fault

P086AE:38:2F Neutral Position Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance Fault

P086A:00-2F Neutral Position Sensor A Circuit / Open

P086B:1E-2F Neutral Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

P086D:00-2F Neutral Position Sensor A Circuit High

Why don't you use FORScan and a vLinker FS lead and then you will get the full story. Generic code readers never do very well at reading Ford specific DTC's and quite often lead you in the wrong direction.

FORScan (free for use on window laptops): https://forscan.org/download.html

vLinker FS cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

Thank you for those links, I wasn't aware. I have ordered it, should arrive Friday. Will post back with results.

The FORScan tool arrived today and I plugged it in. The codes I got are attached.

Do you suspect that the vehicle has been mapped ?

At this stage I'd download the vehicles "AsBuilt" files direct from the Ford server and reload them. At least then you know the car is back to factory defaults and any fiddling about by previous owners will be removed.

Update.

So while playing around with FORScan and res-setting codes I have managed to get the car to start now.

The engine makes a lot of noise and shakes alot and there is oil leaking below the engine. I think the cambelt might be gone. I have attached a video

There is no half way. Either the engine runs and the belt is still intact OR the belt has snapped and the engine is scrap.

"While playing around with FORScan and res-setting codes I have managed to get the car to start now"

So it seems as I said in my previous post the AsBuilt files still need reloading.

I don't think that's engine oil.  Looks very thin and too light coloured?

Definitely not oil. Probably the water pump is kaput and is leaking coolant.

...or the plastic pipe fitting coming away from the pump. The one on my car fractured. They go brittle.

Yep, that's definitely coolant, NOT oil.

Has it had any damage?

Lots of communication issues on the DTCs, check for damaged wiring or loose connections
