Focus mk 2 limp mode

Featured Replies

Hi having an issue with the car going into a power down limp mode when travelling for a period of motorway driving no lights come on the dashboard and clears when turn ignition off never seems to do when city driving only long periods at higher revs any ideas much appreciated

Hi,

Does yours go into "limp mode", but the driving and throttle response remain unaltered,

or does it really go into limp mode with reduced power?

i've had a similar problem, it's worth to check i guess - it turned out to be a couple of cracked solder joints (cable bundle connector - torque on pcb is relatively high) on the instrument cluster PCB. i reflowed them and it's been problem free since (about 15.000 km ago, now it's on 237k)

there's videos on youtube about this.

Which year is it? If it's 2009 then it could be the cracked solder problem but if 2018 it's very unlikely.

Looks like they have both a 2018 Fiesta and a 2009 Focus.  But in this case, Mk2 Focus is in the title.

I'm not convinced it'll be a cluster issue.  Would think it's more likely to be a boost or fuel pressure issue as it only happens with prolonged high speed driving.  Needs to be scanned with Forscan ideally.

Common issues with the mk2/mk2.5 Focus include the dry cluster joint and the BCM/Fusebox dampness/corrosion. Dtcs read from the obd could help diagnose.

my son’s 2008 ST went into limp home on longer runs. Slapping the dash above the centre of the cluster brought it back out of limphome mode.

usually have other malfunction messages like power steering etc

No it goes into a low power limp mode I’ve had the instrument panel resoldered not so long ago but look into that thanks

Thanks for advice so far guys plug into forscan see if anything turns up I heard on the street a possibility of exhaust dpf could be an issue is that possible

it sure is... possibly likelier than the instrument cluster, since you've had it reflowed.

but still - fyi - i remember having problems driving from work, not to work - never on a morning (30min) trip.

also, it was summer, so temperature surely was a factor with setting the flags.

regarding the dpf... you say higher rpm motorway driving - how much ?..seems like it did have opportunity for regen, didn't it?

Yes not a large mileage on motorways say 30 mins at 70 and when coming to junction stopping and driving off you can feel power reduced as soon as you turn ignition off and on power back to normal maybe thinking on the line of the sensor s on exhaust sending signal that are sooted over the car I suppose never had a real good cooking of exhaust I’ll maybe try dpf cleaner to see if that helps
