Mk3 ST Cooling Fan not running intermittently

Featured Replies

So driving to work this morning I noticed my oil temps slowly rising up to half way on the gauge, where they usually never cross the 1/4 mark, and my radiator fan wasn't running when I left my car at work. Checking at lunch time, the fan comes on when I open my door (normal behaviour) and runs with ignition on, no faults

But I bet it will start to overheat again on the drive home. Had wobbled the R14 relay beforehand, I think this is the cooling fan relay?

Would someone be able to summarise the relays to check/replace to eliminate that being the fault? Suggesting somewhere to order the relays that won't be a fake time bomb would be a bonus

Have recently had intake manifold off and fitted oil catch can, so I will also run the car into garage to check the wiring for damage asap

Cheers

Updates: Fan was running initially as I got in the car, wasn't running by the time I got home. Same symptoms. Checked fuse 32, it's okay, it shouldn't be a fuse issue if it was working once before

Running the test screen in the car, I don't have an engine temp screen for a 2012 mk3 st, should I? Does this indicate a temp sensor is down? No engine lights though

DTC screen has 'e10100'

The fan shouldn't be running as soon as you open the door or get in the car.  That doesn't sound like normal operation.

Should only be running once coolant temp gets near 100c or if you switch the air conditioning on.

Updates #2:

- Fan came on and off multiple times today, after messing about with Radiatior Cooling Fan relay J12 the other day I had suspected that was the problem, as it didn't cut out for 2 days beforehand.
- Relay is okay when connected to a battery though;
- Connections to the fan motor itself re-plugged and seem fine.
- Fan will kick back in if A/C is turned on AND the engine is running (Tested 3 times, succesful 3 times)
- Bridge across correct relay terminals did not start the fan

Had left the bonnet open to cool the bay, 5 minutes later the fan suddenly came back on when opening door as per usual, 1 minute later it was un-reactive again, having done nothing but stand there

So it seems the issue is either the fuse box/beyond or the fan motor itself. Need to find a way to connect fan motor directly to battery and test when it fails. Any clues on how to do so?
