Permanent Footwell Lighting, Any Ideas How?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering if anyone had found a way to make the foot well lighting stay on? My mate wired his to his interior lighting switch, so that he could have them on or off by choice. Thanks!

Have you fitted your own footwell lighting or was it factory fitted by Ford?

Can't you ask your mate to do your's for you?

Na it's factory fitted, and because he has Fiat Punto lol

This is a terrible idea for driving at night - you want as little contrast between the outside darkness and the brightness inside your cabin as possible, that way your eyes don't have to adjust when looking from inside to outside. It's why driving along with your interior light on is discouraged...

I just want to know how this could be done, I'd rather not be criticised for it thank you.

it can be done i just fixed one today but be warned the bulbs get hot quite hot if left on all the time as they arent meant to be left on for long periods leave youre courtesy light on for 10 minutes and youll fid out why due to the fact it can cause a fire i cant tell you how to do it but today ive just had to fit new bulb connectors as the bulbs got so hot after being on for over an hour solid they melted the holders ive now put the wiring back to standard

Many thanks Artscot! I don't think I will risk it as I don't want to cause any unnecessary damage. Thanks for clearing that up for me though, looks like you would only want to do this with neon fitted lights. Cheers!

Well pardon me - nobody criticised you thank you, that would have been 'if you have your footwells on all the time you're an idiot'. I made an observation - and a perfectly valid and fairly important one.

you just need to run a permenant live to it instead of a switchable, but im with the others its not a great idea to have it on all the time

One wire from the permanently live interior light supply at the fusebox under the NS dash to the NS light. Continue that wire over to the OS light. Then connections to earth on the other side of each light.

I agree that the usual 5W wedge bulbs used for footwell lights in other Ford models do get hot but, like all incandescent bulbs, they do so very quickly yet hardly to the degree where they'd be a fire hazard. Just mount them so they're not close to any trim. And they last pretty well when used as parking/side lights.

Of course, you could always use Light Emitting Diodes.

If you connect it to the switched live output from the fuse box, then it'd be on with any other accessories, but you couldn't accidentally leave it on when you've left the car. You could even connect it to the instrument panel lighting, so it dims when the lights are turned on, for less distraction at night :P

But of course, you'd use LEDs anyway, to reduce the risk of heat?

i think agree with these guys but if u got some red bulbs from ebay and did it , thy would be fine and its not such a bright light , i personally hate foorwell light as thy show up my unhooverd car lol and also led dont get as hot as normal bulbs so u would be able to keep them on :)

but just remeber (as far as my knowlage goes) if your car did catch alight and you did an insurance claim id doubt if they would pay out if there were aload of homemade wiring in the car :)

That's a good point! Maybe it's a Ford ploy to make us clean our car interiors more often ;)

Ive got UV Blue footwell(and courtesy) LED's in my fez and they give a great glow(though not offputting, cant say id be looking at my feet all too much, more for passengers/ or when im out with mates around our cars) to the interior I asked a while ago if athere was a way how, il try dig up the thread. the answer is yes if you fancy wiring another switch in. I wanted it connected to the courtesy light also and im sure its possible but not sure if anyone explained how.

Thanks

Jay

well cause my dad is a slaughter man and works on a farm , the carpet gets covered in mud, hey and straw lol

Oh right, I'm with everyone else on this :D Maybe instead of having it on permenant why don't you do what your mate did and just hook the footwell lights up to the interior light switch :D How come's you want the footwell light's on anyway?

Hmmm wiring isn't strong point for me with out a step by step guide, so that would help! I don't want them on all the time, only when I want (via switch). I've just bought some red LED's for the footwells, so think will look pretty cool. Thanks!

I hook my up to a switch so I can turn them on and off at my own free will
