I reported having a stutter in my car a while back, and I still have it. At the time, I reverted to using E5 petrol, BP Ultimate (from the newer E10). It made a slight difference but the hesitation is still there. At a constant speed, car runs great, but on accelerating, or turning at low speed, I can sense that all is not right. I note too that when it does stutter, the rev counter is entirely smooth, indicating nothing wrong, but I wonder if the stutter happens that quickly that the rev counter would have time to react? Is it possible there is something in the drive-train causing it, like a clutch component or other?

Good morning Stephen, can you make the stutter happen more often under quick acceleration? 

Worth checking with FORScan just to see if there are any misfires been logged. When did the old girl have a set of new plugs? 

I'd expect it's going to be either an electrical issue with the HT side of things or it's going to be a fuel related issue.

Yes, it does happen under quick acceleration...

I took her in a month ago (after having instrument cluster repaired) and my guy checked on his 'Snapon' diagnostic tool for any fault codes, there were none. However I appreciate that although he paid £1000s for a brilliant looking bit of kit, it may not possess the specific detail of ForScan.

In my ownership, it has never had plugs/HT leads replaced, so I may take that as the next step in trying to fix. As well as E5 fuel, I have also dosed her up with Redex frequently, as well as 'Dipetane' fuel additive, so I would hope with all that gunk swilling in the petrol tank it won't be a fuel issue.

Sounds like the HT side is a good place to start. New coil pack, new leads and plugs.

I would have expected the engine management light to come on if it’s misfiring? ... well it used to on my old Mk1 1.6 Petrol... Although that misfire was caused by the common speed sensor failure on the gearbox. 

I have been suffering an engine stutter now for months. Even got myself a ForScan lead to have a check for a cause of misfiring - nothing. Sure enough, I should have listened to @unofix months ago when he suggested plugs & HT leads LOL (sorry buddy...)

Just had plugs changed today (keeping HT leads in reserve for another day as can't afford both items at once). Well, these are the plugs that came out, as you can see, there is a distinctive 'carbon track' on one which you can definitely feel with a finger nail. 

Drive home was distinctively stutter free, problem has now been solved...

Good to see it’s been solved, changing spark plugs worked for me when I had a similar issue on my old 1.6 as well.

I have the same problem with my 1.4tdci zetec 2008 fiesta. Going along and it stutters. No lights come up, it just misses a quick beat. I can’t force it to do it. Does it at any speed and doesn’t always do it consistently. Does anyone have any ideas please?

@Suejr I would start with changing the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced recently.

Would also recommend starting a new thread for something like this.  Helps us understand which engine you have and what things you may have already tried to solve the problem.

change the glow plugs in your case then, fuel filter and if you don`t know when the oil and filter was last changed i`d be tempted to do them all at the same time, it will be like haveing a new car when your finished 😁
