changing brake disc

Featured Replies

hi guys

hope everyone is ok 🙂

i have changed my front brake pads last week and noticed bit of a lip on the back of the brake disc and my front brakes have stared to squeal. i was just wondering if that has anything to do with the lips on the disc? if it has then could anyone tell me what the nm should be on the bolts that holds the disc please?

many thanks

Disc screws don't take any force so they're not meant to be tight.  Just nipped up by hand is fine.  The wheel nuts clamp the disc between the wheel and hub when the wheel is fitted.

A small disc lip may just mean the pads need a bit longer to bed in and mould to the shape of the disc.  There's often a thick rough patch on the inside of Mk2 front discs though, if that's the case then probably worth changing them.

thank you for the reply.

i have been looking around and found a set with brake pads too so if i do decide to replace it all then i could just get them.

right now i will just wait to see if the squeal goes as i have heard people telling me that sometimes new brake pads do squeal.

how do i know if there is a thick patch? will i be able to tell by visual or feel?

You'll be able to see the rough patch easily.  But not while they're fitted as the disc guard covers it.

cheers again tom 🙂

Dug out the picture of mine while looking for pics for another thread.  Just under 50k on these at 6 years old.  Front face didn't look too bad.  Rear face looks awful!

You know Tom! I changed the discs & pads on our Fiesta, be about 2014 and looked exactly the same as your pics, must be Ford and their high quality equipment they use!!! now got decent Ferodo discs & pads fitted, even to this very day they still look in excellent condition

Actually I wouldn't mind trying ferodo, you don't happen to have the link do you?

Are the brakes making  grinding noise or a higher pitched squeak?  If if grinding it will probably be the new pads rubbing against the lips and should go away when bedded in. If not, replace the discs.  If it's squeaking, did you put any grease on the back of the pads, this should help it

If you do replace the discs, then don't buy cheap unknown stuff. I personally use EBC discs and pads, and previously used Ferrodo and Mintex. I would also trust Pagid or Brembo that Euro Car Parts sell. I'm sure if you search you can always discount codes for the site.

The discs/pads are for a Fiesta but the condition was exactly the same as Toms.

I got my brake-set from our car parts supplier, they came in an all over silver finished, the silver rubs off the braking area but the rest of the disc stays a silver finish that resists rusting, so looks superb, picture is for reference only how the coated discs look like.

Probably one of the most important parts of a car, in terms of safety, and people still buy cheap crap from Ebay!!!

Those are rear discs and pads.  They're also solid rather than vented, the stock picture is mislelading.

I always say, Never skimp on tyres and brakes, it's what touches the road and what stops you!

Remember, Performance is desirable, stopping is essential!

Back in the 70's/80's/90's that was so true when you could buy cheap nasty stuff, discs that would warp and wear down within months, but times have changed for the better, gone are the days of buying monkey metal suspension parts, I still say the selling of part-worn tyres should be illegal.

Yep, I can remember my dad fitting some unknown pads to his MG Maestro, back in the early 90s just before n MOT (no time to order Mintex ones) and within 5 or corners of moderate braking the pads were smoking! He also commented they had around half the life of normal pads too. Since then, we have always insisted good pads are fitted, Ferrodo, EBC, Mintex, etc.

However, since then there has been regulations ( eg R90) to improve the quality and performance of brakes. I understand, one part of it is pads have to perform within a certain percentage of car manufactures pads.

Sorry if this is going too :offtopic: Maybe I should have posted it in the OP's other thread.

Anyone care to compile a list of tried and trusted Ebay spare part manufacturers? Or does one already exist?

This would help the community trying to source decent parts at a decent price.
